BLANK-CLIP.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 261,173, dated July 18, 1882.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM WEEKS PRICHARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Russell, in the county of Greenup and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Blank-Clip, (which has not been patented to myself nor to any other person, with my consent or knowledge, in any foreign country,) ofwhich the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in clips for holding bank, telegraph, and other blanks and papers, and its object is to produce an efficient clip of very simple and cheap construction and without parts liable to be deranged or to wear out, which can be made to fasten to a permanent support, or to stand without being fastened to anything, and to fit into a contracted space when necessary, and also of different sizes for holding the blanks used in offices or the bags and wrapping-papers used in stores without changing the principle of its construction or the manner of its operation. I attain this object by bending elastic wire into any convenient shape, having the following parts, viz: first, a file for holding papers; second, one or more screw-eyes to receive screws for fastening the clip to a support or an equivalentbase upon which it can stand without being fastened; and, third, a spring-guard for preventing the papers on the file from being blown off. The form which I have selected as the simplest, most efficient, and most easily made out of all which I have used is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side view. Fig. 2 is atop view showing a clip with one screw-eye. Fig. 3 is a top view showing a clip with a base upon which it can stand without being fastened to anything, and Fig. 4. is a top view showing a clip bent to fit it for a special position.

Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

A is the file upon which the papers are attached. It has a sharp point to pierce the papers as they are put upon it.

B is a screw-eye formed of a single coil of a counter, desk, or wall.

B is a base coil, intended as asubstitute for coil B and to support the clip without its being fastened to anything. The spring-guard is made to consist of the parts D, E, F, and G, so as to obtain in a small space a spring of considerable length and elasticity and to avoid the use of sharp angles or points.

D is the lower limb of the spring. E is a coil in the middle of it. E is the upper limb, and G is ring formed on its end. The ring G is held by the spring with a slight pressure against the side of file A near its point. It therefore effectually prevents the papers on the file from blowing off, but is easily moved out of the way when papers are being put on the file, and it allows the thinnest papers to be pulled off without being torn.

The size of this clip is determined by the use it is to be put to. For holding telegraph or bank blanks I find one of about two inches and a half long with a file of from half an inch to an inch long very convenient, and for holding paper bags or wrapping paper in groceries I find one of about four inches long with a file of about two inches long suitable. The kind of wire suitable for making such articles and the method of bending it into shape and of pointing the file A are so well known to those skilled in the manufacture of wire goods that it is unnecessary to specify them.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A paper-clip consisting ofa continuous piece of elastic wire provided with a file-point, 'A, a ring-guard, Gr, standing in a plane with said file-point, an upper limb, F, spring-coil E, and lower limb, D, having a screw-eye, B, or its equivalent, as shown and described, all ar-. ranged to operate as set forth.
