UNITED STATES I PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES M. FIFE, OFOANTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO F. W. BOND AND WILLIAM J. PIERO, OF SAME PLACE.
LAMP-BURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 260,469, dated July 4, 1882. Application filed November 12, 1881. (NomodeL) To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES M. FIFE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Burners; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a sectional elevation of a lamp-burner embodying my invention, taken on line y y of Fig. 4. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same with the slide forming a part of the wick-tube removed. Fig. 3 is a detail view, in perspective, of the slide; and Fig. 4, an under side plan view of the burner.
This invention relates to that class of lampburners in which the wick-tubeis made in two pieces or halves, oneof the pieces or halves being attached to the frame of the burner in the ordinary manner; and its natdre consists in providing the piece or half of the wick-tube attached to the frame with toothed wheels similar to those used in lamp-burners in general use, and in providing said Wick-tube with a sliding piece or half, and in bending the sides of said pieces or halves, as shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 4, so as to form the wick-tube, and at the same time form grooves to receive the sliding piece or half.
In the drawings, A represents the piece or half of the wick-tube attached to the burnerframe 0; B, the sliding piece or half of the wick-tube; O, the burner-frame; D, the wheel for regulating the wick; E, the wick-regulating rod F F, the toothed wheels; G, the knob; H, the stop on the sliding piece or half B J J, the grooves in the piece or half attached to the burner-frame O; K, the grooves in the sliding piece or half B.
The frame 0 and its several parts may be made of brass or any other suitable material. The frame C may be of any desired form, so as to admit the attachment of the wick-tube A and the sliding piece or half B. The bottom or lower end of the frame 0 is provided with a screw. This screw may be madein one piece; or it may be made in two pieces or halves, one of said pieces or halves being formed on the frame'and the other piece or half formed on the bottom or lower end of the sliding tube B, soas to;form a perfect screw when the sliding tube is placed in proper position. If the screw is made perfect, the sliding tube B is made so as to slide' in the same manner as when halfof the screw is attached to it.
The bottom or lower end of the slide B is provided with stops H, which are for the purpose of stoppln g the slide-tube B at the desired point, said sliding tube being operated by the knob G.
In use the burner is removed from thelamp in the ordinary way. The sliding tube may be drawn out, or partly so, and the wick placed in said sliding tube, and the wick and tube simultaneously placed in proper position by pressing the knob G.
It will be seen that by forming the wick-tube in two pieces or halves, one of the pieces or halves being removable, it will be much easier to adjust the wick, and also to keep said wicktube clean and less liable to explode, and at the same timeincrease the capillaryattraction, and thereby increase the light of the lamp.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is-- 1. A lamp wick-tube, either round or flat, made in two pieces or halves, one of said pieces or halves being attached to the burner-frame O, in combination with the grooves K K, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The sliding piece or half B, provided with the stops H, in combination with the grooves J J, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES M. FIFE.
