REGULATOR FOR THE WICKS OF LANTERN S.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 48,254, dated June 20, 1865.

To all whom it may concern V Be it known that I, HENRY W. BLEYER, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, haveinvented 5, new and Improved Mode of Regulating the Wicks of Lamps for Lanterns; and I do hereby declare that the following is' a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a lantern-lamp provided with myinveniion; Fig.2, a'plan or top View of the same. i

This invention relates to a new and improved means for regulating the wicks of lamps for lanterns, whereby the wicks may be raised and lowered without removing the lamp from the lantern, and with the greatest facility.

A represents a lantern-lamp constructed in the ordinary manner, and provided with a burner, B, having a flat wick, which is raised and lowered by a serrated wheel on a shaft, 0- the usual means employed for such purpose. The parts thus far described are all well known and in common use.

On the outer end of the shaft 0 there is placed a toothedwheel, D and E is a rod, which is fitted on a pin, a, projecting from the side of the lamp, the rod E being bent to form an oblong slot, 1), for the pin a to pass through and admit of a certain degree of vertical play of said rod. The slot b may be formed by having the rod E sufficiently wide to admit of a hole being punched through it. I do not confine myself to any particular manner of forming the slot. The rod E passes through an oblong slot, 0, in the base of thelamp, and projects down suflieiently far below it to admit of being grasped or operated by the fingers, and when said rod is left free it will by its own gravity be below the wheel 0, so that its upper end will not be in-contaet with O, as shownin Fig.1. At any time, however, when it is necessary to adjust the lamp-wick, (raise or lower it,) the rod E is shoved upwartl until its upper end engages with the wheel D, and the latter is turned in the proper direction for raising or lowering the wick by vibrating the rod E on its pin 0, the rod E being lowered free from the wheel at each backward movement, in order that said wheel will not be turned in the wrong direction. It will be seen that the wick is raised by turning the wheel in one direction and lowered by turning it in the opposite direction. Thus by this simple means the wick of the lamp may be raised and lowered without removing the lamp from the lantern.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The rod E, provided with an oblong slot, 0, and fitted on a pin, a, or arranged in any suitable way, so as to have a requisite degree of longitudinal play or adjustment, in combination with the toothed wheel D on shaft 0, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
