Description

l. ZENGELER.
Attaching Chimneys to Lamps.
N. PETERS, PhUbLRhogrlphur, Walhngkm. D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
JOHN ZENGELER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHIMNEY-ATTACHMENTS FOR. LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 37,316, dated January 6, 1863..
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN ZENGELER, of Chicago, in the county Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Attaching Chimneys to Lamps 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of my invention applied to a lamp-burner, also bisected, m w, Fig. 2, indicates the plane of section. Fig. 2 is a plan or Jfop view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures. Y
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents a burner, which may be constructed in the usual or in any proper way,
y and B is a clamp, formed of two semicircular springs, a a, which are connected at one end to an arm, b, secured in a lug or ear, c, at one side of the burner by a pivot, d. The opposite ends of the springs da are in contact, and form a circle or band, in which the lower end of the chimney is secured, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 1. The arm b is allowed to work freely on its pivot d so that the clamp may be adjusted in a horizontal position to enable the chimney to fit over the cone or de flector U of the burner, or adjusted in an upward position, so that the chimney may beoi' from the cone or detlector, as shown in red outline in Fig. l. The clamp B is secured in either of these two positions by means of a spring, D, which is attached to the under side of the arm b, and bears upon or against a friction-roller, e, in the lug or ear c, as shown clearly in Fig. l. This spring I) not only secures the arm b in either of the two 'positions specified, but it also accelerates the movement of the arm and clamp from one position to the other, the arm being moved by the application of the fingers or thumb of the operator. By this invention it will be seen that the chimney may be readily adjusted over the cone or detlector or removed from it, and by a very quick movement, so that no smoke or odor can escape after the Wick is lighted and before the chimney is placed over the cone or detlector.
I am aware that lamp-burners have been provided with hinged cones and the chimneys attached to the cones so that both the chimney and cone may be moved off from the burner to expose the wick-tube for trimming and lighting the wick. This arrangement, however, is objectionable on account of the iiame smoking badly, a result attending the absence of the cone, and which causes considerable odor to escape before the cone and chimney can be adjusted over the wick-tube, however quickly it may be done.. The cone when left on the burner prevents in a great measure the escape of smoke from the flame, and enables the wick to belighted without the escape of odor, provided the work be expeditiously done, and the upper end of the wick,`
when lighted, be quite low or near'the orifice ofthe wick-tube. The removal of the cone or deliector from the burner is only necessary when the wick requires to be trimmed, and that is at comparatively long intervals 5 hence the removal of the cone or deflector from the burner when the wick is to be lighted should be avoided, and this is done by my invention. It will ot' course be seen that the clamp rests on the cone, and retains thesame in proper position on the burner when the latter is in use and the chimney in proper position.
I am aware that by an arrangement of devices somewhat diiferent from mine a lampchimney has before been mounted so that it could be turned over off the lamp-top without removing the cone or deflector.
As before stated, I do not claim, broadly, the hinging of the chimney, nor do I claim, broadly, the use of spring-holders in connection with lamp-chimneys.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The. combination of the friction-roller @with the pivoted arm b, spring-clamp B, and curved spring D, all constructed, arranged, and employed, in connection with the lamp-top A, in the manner and for the purposes herein shown and explained.
JOHN ZENGELER.
