Description

A. TURN BU LL. Lamp Extinguisher.
Patented Jan. 28, 1862.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW TURNBULL, OF WEST MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEM ENT IN LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 34,277, dated January 28, 1862.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ANDREW TURNBULL, of West Meriden, county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Tops; and I do hereby declare that the same is described and represented in the following specification and drawing.
To enable others skilledin the art to make and use my improvement, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the drawing, in which the same letters indicate like parts in the figure.
This improvement consists in providing an extinguisher or snuifer for the purpose of snuffing the coal from the wick and to extinguish the light when desirable.
In the accompanying drawing is shown a lamp-top very much like those in common use.
A isthe top, having flaring perforated sides a, and an ornamental band at around its upper edge, and a screw 6 at its base for securing it to the lamp, and the common toothwheel 9 for adjusting the wick to its proper height, and also the proper fastenings for holding the chimney h and the burner-cap z' in their proper place. Now, in addition to the foregoing, I provide a spindle bent in the form of a crank j near its center between each end, and secure it in a proper manner in holes made in each side of the top, so as to bring the crank directly against and near to the side of the wick-tube f. Then I secure to said crank a piece of metal plate bent into the proper shape, (see j',) so that when turned forward toward the wick-tube fit will both snuff the wick and extinguish the blaze. I also cut an opening is in the side and fit thereto a proper slide Z to open and close said opening, so that a match may be inserted to the Wickthrough the opening without removing the cap or chimney therefrom. Thus it will be seen that after the cap and chimney are properly secured to the top the wick can be raised or depressed, the flame can be produced to the wick by inserting a match through the side opening It thereto, and the charred wick or snuff of the wick be removed and the flame extinguished, all in a free and eas manner without removin the cap OLWWN chimney.
In the ordinary way, when it is desirable to light the wick, the chimney and cap have to be removed, and when by any cause the light is extinguished it (the chimney) has to be removed, and is the more irksome from its being heated and therefore very likely to be broken; but by the use of thisimprovement such accidents are removed, and the lamp is rendered (therewith) much more pleasant for use.
Ibelieve I have shown the nature, construction, operation, and the advantage to be derived from my improvement, so as to enable a person skilled in the art to make the same.
What I claim, therefore, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Combining withthe tube f a spindle-crank j, snulfer or extinguisher j, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 20th day of December, 1861.
ANDREWV TURNBULL. [L. S.]
