UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CELADON L. DABOLL, OF NEW LONDON, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVED WICK-TUBE FOR LAMP-BURNERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 38,567, dated May 19, 1863.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CELADoN L. DABOLL,
. of New London, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and improved method for constructing tubes for lamps for burning kerosene and other oils and fluids; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description there of, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in constructing the burner-tube of a straight flat piece of brass or other metal, for the one side or back part of the same, E, Figure 2, with sufficient lips or edge turned forward to admit another straight flat piece of brass or other metal,F, Fig. 1, without lips, but plain edged, to work in and out freely between the lips or edge of the back piece, B, Fig. 2. The front part or piece, F, Fig. 1, being fastened or secured at its base or lower end. within the lips or edges of the back part, B, Fig. 2, makes an openin g to the tube suificient for the free passage of any description of wick in ordinary use for lamp-burners, and being slightly inclined inward from a parallel toward the upper end of the back part, B, Fig. 2, is thus allowed to press easily against the wick, adapting itself to any thickness of the same, and, by the tension or spring of the metal from having been rolled or hammered sufficiently to be flexible and elastic, a perfect and uniform pressure upon the upper end or burning-point is obtained while the tube is allowed to preserve its straight form, the back part, B, Fig. 2, serving as a perpendicular conductor for the wick to move against in a straight form, While the front part, F, Fig. 1, allows the ratchet-wheels to play freely through it in the apertures made therein, and to raise or lower the wick without hinderance, and at the same time the moving shaft or axle of the ratchet is kept outside of the tube, thus avoiding the evil consequences frequently attendant upon the ratchet-wheels being placed wholly inside the burner-tube, as is the case with some burner-tubes now in use.
I know that lamp-burners are made of almost every conceivable form, pattern, and design, and I do not claim as my invention any particular form or pattern of lamp-burners in its general sense; but
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The form and manner of constructing the tube for lamp-burners for kerosene and other oils and fluids, as substantially set forth in the above and foregoing specifications.
