Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
A. O. KETGHUM, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO WM. P. PETTINGILL AND S. T. MGDO UGALL.
IMPROVEMENT IN COAL-OIL LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 40,080, dated September 22, 1863.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, A. O. KETGHUM, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Construction of Kerosene or Goal-Oil Burners and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the said lnvention.
The nature of my invention consists in providing the wick-tube with a cross-bar running at right angles with the same, and attached to either that or the base, or both, for the purpose of causing the air to enter the jacket or deflector on either side, independent of the other, so that when the lamp is carried through the air the cross-bar or partition will act as a deflector and cause the air to rush upward, thereby strengthening the flame, whereas, were it not there, there would be a current directly across the base, and draw the flame down and put it out. It also forms an excellent restingplace for the jacket or deflector. The bearing of the deflector being so small upon the partition that it neither gives nor receives much heat, it also leaves a free admission of air, as it touches nothing but the small point above mentioned.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction.
Figure 1 is a vertical section. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
Gorrespondin g letters indicate the same parts.
Ais the base thatscrews in the socket of the lamp. B is the wick-tube. O is the roller for adjusting the wick. D is the jacket or deflector. E is the crossbar-or partition attached to the tube B, D having a slot cut in each side of its base, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to slip down each side of partition E, with a shoulder at each end of partition E to hold it in its place firmly both ways, which is shown in Fig. 1.
Having thus fully described the nature of my invention, what I claim, and desire to obtain by Letters Patent, is
1. The application of the partition or cross-v bar E to the tube B and baseA.
2. The peculiar mode of attaching the jacket D, as shown in Fig. 1.
3. The combination of the jacket 1) with the partition E, and attached to the tube and base, B and A, substantially as described, thereby making a simple and economical burner.
A. 0. KETOHUM. Witnesses:
