IMPROVEMENT IN LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,989, dated October 31, 1876; application filed lingual-1,1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HORACE B. THOMPSON, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamps; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the construction of the burner of a kerosene or other oil lamp in which a rigid or indestructible tubular wick is used, and in the means employed therein for increasing or diminishing the light; and the object of the said improvements is to adapt a burner of that description to be used in an Ordinary stand-lamp or a hand-lamp, by admitting the air for supplying the ame above the oilfount, and also'by locating the adjusting devices above the oil-fount, so that by means of my said improvements a lamp-burner having a rigid tubular wick may easily and readily be applied to and used upon any ordinary stand or hand lamp.
My said invention consists, rst, in providing a lamp-burner in which a rigid tubular wick is used with a lateral opening extending from the outside to the center of the same, and located above the oil-fount, and with an adjustable inner tube for increasing and diminishing the light, so that the supply of air is admitted above the oil-fount; and it also consists in an improved construction and arrangement of the devices employed for regulating the degree of light produced, as hereinafter more particularly described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional elevation of my improved burner, and Fig. 2 a vertical section of the same taken at right angles to the former.

a and b are two concentric tubes, between which the rigid wick c is held, the tube a. being provided with a screw-thread at its lower end, with which to secure it within the lamp in the ordinary manner. The tube b is somewhat shorter at its upper end, so as to leave a portion of the upper end of the wick c exposed on its inner surface. d is an inner adjustable tube, which fits and works closely within the tube b, which, when it is raised, will diminish the light, and when it is lowered will increase the light, by reason of its leaving a smaller or a larger portion of the wick c exposed to the air. Secured to or forming part of. the tube d is a ratchet-rod, e, which passes downward and is operated by a toothed pinion, f, which latter is located above the oilfount, and is secured upon a pin or shaft, h, which passes transversely through the burner, and has bearings either in one of the tubes that form the burners or in other suitable position, and is turned by means of a knob, i, in the usual manner. m is a lateral opening, which extends from the outer to the inner surfaces of the tubes that form the burner, which said opening is located above the oilfount, and is for the purpose of admitting the requisite supply of air to support combustion at a point above the oil-fount, instead of admitting such supply of air below the oilfount, as has heretofore been the practice in burners of this kind.
It will be readily seen that by this construction and arrangement of the several parts my improved burner may readily and easily be applied to any ordinary stand or hand lamp, thereby rendering a tubular burner and rigid wick applicable for general use in the various kinds of oil-lamps in common use.
I may mention that the above-described arrangement Of the Wick and inner tube may be modified so as to raise and lower the wick itself 5 `but I consider the above-described arrangement preferable to the latter mode.
What I claim as my invention isl. A lamp-burner for a kerosene or other oil lamp in which a rigid wick is used, provided with a lateral opening, m, above the oil-fount for the admission of air, and with an adjustable inner tube, d, for increasing and diminishing the light, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
