' NITE ASTATES PATENT OFFICE.
RUBEN B. AYRES, OF S'll. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
KITCHEN-SAFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,449, dated March 7, 1882.
Application filed July 1l, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, RUBEN B. Avans, a resident of St.`Lonis, Missouri, have made a new and useful Improvement in Kitchen Safes and Oupboards, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is aview in perspective of a hitchen safe having the improvement in question, portions of the exterior' being broken away to exhibitvthe mechanism used in fastening the sides ofthe safe to the ends, and Figs. 2, 3, 4, 5 details, Fig.2 being avertieal section taken through one of the fasteners, the parts of the fastener being detached from each other; Fig.
3, a similar section, the parts of the fastener being interlocked; Fig. 4, a horizontal section taken through the safe upon the line .fr x, Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 a similar horizontal section, showing a modification in the construction of the safe.
The same letters denote the same parts.
The present invention relates especially to the mode of uniting the sides and ends of the safe, the aim being to provide an improved means by which the safe can be readily and securely set up from a knookdown shape and be taken. apart again whenever desired, as when the safe needs to be cleaned or moved.
In the drawings, Fig.l,A representsakitchen-safe of the usual construction, saving as modied by the present improvement.
B represents the front of the safe, and O O the ends. These parts are manufactured separately, each end and side by itself, and are sent outto the trade in that shape, and they are put together as follows:
D represents a plate, slotted at d and attached to either an end or side of the safesay to the front B,as shown in Figs. l, 2, 3, 4, being held in a mortise, b, and secured therein preferably by means of the pins d d. This plate D extends beyond the edge of its section B. Below the slot d the portion z of this plate runs up with a straight edge, y, which merges into a curve, v, running up to the slot d atthe point t,where the lower edge of the slot comes to the curve fv. The upper portion vor hook, u, of the plate D extends outwardly and downwardly, so that its point p comes out beyond the point t and is rounded off, as shown.
' This construction brings the mouth of slot d (No model.)
on the line of curve f:1,the extreme point, p, coming beyond such mouth. The plate D, when the front and end are put together, enters a mortise, c, in the end C, and the end and iront are fastened together by means of the pin c', which is held in the endO, and which, as the end and front come together, engages in the slot d, substantially as shown in Figs. 1,3, 4, 5. The peculiar construction of the plate D iusures the connection of the parts with facility and ease. As the parts are put together the plate D, entering the mortise c, strikes the pin c on the edge y, when downward and sidewise pressure causes the pin to be guided up the curve o against the point p and with certainty into the slot d, and this without fail. The slot d isextended in the plate D, so as to cause the end and front to draw closely together as the pin passes into the slot. Similar slotted platesD and pins c are arranged both near the upper end and' lower end of the safe.
In place of attaching the plate Dto the front B, it may be attached to the end C, and in such case the pin c is attached to the front B, and the end and front are relatively arranged and constructed as in Fig. 5, the front B abutting against the edges ofthe ends C C in place of, as in Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4, the ends C C abutting against the edges of the front B.
I am aware that a knockdown safe is not new, and that a fastening having a slot for engagement4 with a pin has been used in the construction of bedsteads. Whatldesire to claim' is my peculiar construction whereby certainty -ot' action is insured and the parts easily and readily secured; therefore What I claim as of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a knockdown safe, one portion provided with a slot c and pin c', in combination with the other portion provided with a plate, D, having slot d, a lower portion, z, provided with straight edge y and curve o, coming to the point t of the slot rl, and the hook a, the point p of which projects beyond the mouth of the slot d, all constructed and arranged substantially as set forth, whereby is formed a certain and efficient means of uniting the parts.
