Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN C. KOHLER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO WIL- LIAM L. MCDOWELIn OF SAME PLACE.
STOVE-KNOB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 256,576, dated April 18, 1882. Application filed January 25, 1882. (No model.l
To all whom it may concern:
.Be it known that I, JOHN C. KoHLER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county ofPhiladelphia,.S ate of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stove-Knobs, which improvement is fullyv set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings,in which Figure l is a side elevation of the knob embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear view thereof. Fig. 3 is a'top View thereof. Fig. 4 is a section thereof in line a; m, Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Knobs have beer? attached to stove doors or drawers in various ways; but the objection to them is the difficulty of their application and removal and expense, and this my invention is designed to remedy.
My invention consists ofa knob for a door or drawer of a stove, formed with an eye which is passed through the door or front plate of the drawer, a wedgingor tightening pin, and logs on the inner face of said door or plate,
whereby when the knob is in position and the pin is forced into the eye the pin tightens on the lugs with a biting eflect. Furthermore, the lugs cause the pin to set out from the wall of the door or drawer plate, so that it may be 'titted to the eye of the knob, driven into position, and removed when required, these operations being accomplished in a convenient manner.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a portion of a door or drawer of astove or heating apparatus, the description of the invention now being limited to the door of the stove or heating apparatus.
B represents the knob of said door, the rear 40 or inner end whereof is formed with an elongated eye, 0, which is passed through an opening, D, in the door, the shoulder E at the j unction of the eye and shank of the knob preventing undue entrance of the shank into the door and making a tight joint with the front of said 5 door. On the rear of the door are horizontally-extending lugs F, which circumscribe the upper and lower walls of the opening in the door and project therefrom a distance less than the length of the eye 0, as most clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 4.
G represents a pin of wedging form, which is passed through the eye 0 and rides on the lugs F, whereby when said pin is forced down it tightens on said lugs, and, bearing against 5 the wall of the eye 0 on the side opposite to the knob B, forces the eye inwardly, and thus draws the knob tightly against the part A and securely connects the parts.
It will be seen that should it be desired to force the pin into the eye to a greater extent, said eye, owing to its elongated form, permits further wedgingaction of the pin and increased tightening of the knobon the door, the method of faslenin g the knob being simple, inexpen- ;,sive, and reliable. Furthermore, the head and point of the pin G are conveniently accessible,
so as to be struck in order to be driven into and out of position, as they set out from the part A, and the lugs F present biting-surfaces for the pin Gr, whereby the latter takes firm hold of the former without liability of slipping and loosening.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The knob having an eye, the wedging-pin, and the stove portion having an opening and projecting lugs, the parts being combined and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN o. KOHLER.
