UNITED STATES PATENT (DEEroEc WILLIAM S. NEWTON CF GREENVILLE, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN PEGGlNG-AWLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,660, dated Februaryl, 1876; application led January 29, 1876.
To all ywhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, W1LLIAM S. NEWTON,
` of Greenville, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented certain. new and useful Improvements in Peggin g- Awls; and I do hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specificaton.` l
My inventionrelates to an improvement'in peggingawls; and it consists in the arrangement and combination of parts that will be` more fully described hereinafter.
The accompanying drawings represent my invention.
a represents the stock, having an enlarged head, c, upon which are fastened a number Y of pieces of leather, d, so as to prevent the hammer from striking' the iron head. Upon the lower end ot' the stock is formed the usual clamping device e for holding the `awl. Inclosing this stock is the cylindrical handle g, the upper end of which is screwed tothe head of the stock c, as shown, While upon the inner edge of the other end is formed the ange ,which serves as a stop for the extractor h.V This extractor has va flange around its upper edge, which catches against the flange l, and prevents it from being forced out of the handle, While its other end forms a at bearing-surfacev that bears upon the leather as the awl is driven in.' Through opposite sides of this extractor are made the openings j, so as to give ready access to the clamp c, which projects down below the lower edge of the cylinder g. By means ot' these openings the clamp can be opened andclosed at willfor the purpose ot' changing the awls Without having to remove or take apartany ot' the whole device. In oneedge of the lower end is cut a Vshaped notch, o, which' enables the operator to see just where to put his awl. Placed inside of the handle surrounding the stock is the'eoiled spring 2, which bears against the head c at one end, and on top of the extractor at'the other.` When the vawl is driven intoside so as to see' where to put the awl, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of' the stock a, head c, handle g, extractor h, ilanges and spring, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 19th day of January, 1876.
