IMPROVEMENT IN PEG-CUTTER HANDLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,014, dated April 13, 1875; application fihd March 24, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM R. BARTON, of Georgetown, in the county of Essex, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Peg-Gutter Handles, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact, to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which 7 Figure l is a sectional isometrical perspective view. 4

My invention relates more especially to that class of peg-cutters which are employed by boot and shoe hottomers; and consists in a handle provided with a sleei e or slide rest, as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed, by which it is prevented from injuring the shoulder of the operator, and other advantages are attained over those in ordinary use.

It is well known that in the use of peg-cutters of this description, the handle is generally placed on the shoulder of the operator, and, as great pressure is employed, and the handle constantly moved back and forth, it soon renders its continued use very painful and injurious to the workman.

My invention is designed to obviate this obection or difliculty, and to that end I construct and arrange the parts in a manner which will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following description In the drawing, A is the handle, which is provided at its upper end with the knob (J, and at its lower with the haft or hand-piece B. Arranged to slide freely on the body of the handle, there is a sleeve or rest, D, which is represented in the drawing as broken away at a, to show its interior construction.

The hole in the rest through which the handle passes flares from the center of the rest outwardly, so that the handle may not only slide freely through the same, but also he rocked or vibrated therein, the center of the rest acting as a fulcrum.

In the use of a peg-cutter provided with my improved handle, the rest D, which is exteriorly concaved, as shown, is placed on orv against the shoulder of the operator, Where it acts not only as a pad to prevent laming or injuring the shoulder, and wearing out the clothing, but also as a guide for the handle, perfecting and very much facilitating the process of cutting the pegs.

Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is- A peg-cutter handle provided with the sliding rest D, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
