Description

ateni tidos,
FOSTER UTLEY, OF CHAPEL HILL, NORTH CAROLINA.
Letters Patent No. 113,948; dated April 18, 1871.'
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHlNG-MACHINES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making pari: of the name,
To all whom it 'may concern Be itknown that I, FOSTER UTLEY, of Chapel Hill, in the county of Orange and State lof North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Iniprovements in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying `drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a washing-machine,
as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the ait f"to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which is aA longitudinal vertical section of' my improved washing-machine.
A represents a tub of any desired' dimensions, across the top of which is laid a bar, B, securedby means of the pins a a through the cuffs O C, as shown.
Through the center of the cross-bar B passes a screw, D, which also passes through a nut, E, inserted' in a recess in the underside of said cross-bar.
The lower end of the screw I) is rmly secured in or tothe center of a circular rubber, G, as shown.
By taking out the pins a a the cross-bar, screw,.and top rubber are removed and the clothes put in the tub, when the said parts are put in place again and I the screw turned down until the rubber G isdown upon the clothes. l o
Then, by means of a handle, H, attached to the up per end of the screw, the screw and rubber are turned back and forth.
By this means the operator has the entire control of the clothes by rolling, rubbing, and pressing all at the same time, without any injury to theclothes. The operator may rub as hard or as light as maybe desired by running the screw up or down.
The rubbing surfaces-that is, the upper surface of the bottom of the tub and the under surface of the rubber G-may be either smooth or corrugated as may be deemed most advantageous.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with a tub, A, the cross-bar B, screw D, rubber G, and handle or lever H, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I aliix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
i FOSTER UlLEY.
