J. GABET 86 G. KOBHLINGER.
COMBINED DOOR CHECK AND BUFFER.
No. 348,275. Patented Aug. 31, 1886.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH GABET AND GUSTAV KOEHLTNGER, OF NE\V HAVEN, INDIANA.
COMBINED DOOR CHECK AND BUFFER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 348,275, dated August 31, 1886.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JosErH GABET and GUSTAV KOEHLINGER, citizens of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oombined Door Stop and Buffer; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
' This invention relates to combined door stops and buffers.
The object of the invention is to produce a combined door stop and buffer by which the force of the blow of the door in opening against the wall is reduced and danger of injury to the door or wall is obviated.
Furthermore, the object of the invention is to produce a combined stop and buffer which shall be more simple and cheaper in construction than those heretofore constructed and so made as to be capable of being placed rapidly in position and without requiring any considerable amount of work.
Furthermore, the object is to produce a door stop and buffer which may be made by the addition of parts to the most ordinary construction of buffer.
\Vith these objects in view the invention resides in a combined door stop and buffer consistingin abuffer of the ordinary construction provided at its end with a bulb of rubber placed either upon the door or upon the base-board against which the door strikes in opening, and an opening formed either in the door or in the base-board and having its mouth partially closed by a plate of metal provided with an opening of such size as to admit the rubber bulb while in a compressed state and prevent its withdrawal except by the application of considerable force when in its normal or distended condition.
Furthermore, the invention consists in a buffer provided at its end with a bulb of rubber placed either upon the door or upon the base-board against which the door strikes, and an opening formed either in the door or the base-board, having its mouth closed by a plate provided with an opening of sufficient size to admit the rubber bulb while in a compressed state and prevent its withdrawal except by the application of considerable force when in its distended or normal condition, that face of the opening against which the bulb impinges U being made to conform to the contour of the bulb, so that any lost movement shall be prevented and the door held securely in an open position until proper force is applied to remove the bulb from the opening.
Furthermore, theinvention residesina com bined door stop and buffer consisting in a buffer of ordinary construction provided at its outer end with a rubber bulb placed either upon the door or upon the base-board against which the door strikes when open, and an opening or chamber formed either in the baseboard or door provided with a plate to partially close the opening and having a passage of sufficient size to admit the bulb while in a contracted condition and prevent its with drawal except by the application of considerable force when in its normal or distended condition, that portion of the opening against which the bulb impinges being formed of plastic material, conforming to the contour of the rubber bulb to insure a close fit of the parts and prevent rattling.
We have illustrated the invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the door-stop provided with the bulb. Fig. 2 is a front elevation showing the opening either in the door or base-board partially closed by a plate. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section showing the parts in such position as to hold the door in an open position.
In this drawing, A represents the door, and B represents the baseboard.
In order that the device may be formed at comparatively little expense and without requiring particular and unusual forms of all the parts, we take the ordinary door-buffer O and provide it at its outer end with a bulb of rubber, c, which is attached in any desired or suitable manner to the buffer. This buffer is designed to be placed either upon the door or upon the base-board; but preferably upon the latter. In order to form a socket for the re- ICQ preferably countersunk into the wood in order to present no projections against which clothing or thelike might catch. This plate is provided with an opening, (1, of such diameter as to admit the bulb 0 when in a slightly contracted state, and in order that the construction may be effected by simply opening the door and pressing the bulb against the plate, the edge of the opening in the latter is made beveled, as shown, in order to condense the rubber as it isforced inward. The inner face of the plate is also beveled in order to allow the immediate expansion of the bulk as soon as it has entered the opening. The face of the chamber opposite the opening in the plate is so made as to conform to the shape of the bulb and form a bearing upon a considerable portion of the surface of the same, so that when the bulb has been pressed past the plate there will be allowed comparatively little motion and the door held securely in place. This face E, against which the bulb rests, is preferably formed of some plastic material-as, for
instance, putty, plastenof-paris, or the like, as this is more readily formed and can be made cheaper than by making an indentation of the particular form required on wood.
. Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In testimony whereof we aflix oursignatnres 0 in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH GABET. GUSTAV KOEHLINGER.
