Description

G. ERWIN.
SHUTTER FASTENER 0R BbWEB. A'PPLIOATION FILED JULY 2a, 1909.
Patented Nov. 2, 1909.
GRACE ERWIN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SHUTTER FASTENER OR BOWER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 2, 1909.
Application filed July 26, 1909. Serial No. 509,635.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GRACE ERWIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shutter Fasteners or Bowers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved shutter fastener or bower, the object of the invention being to provide a shutter fastener or bower, which can be easily and quickly manipulated to lock the shutter in a closed position, and also allow the shutters to be opened to different positions and hold the same in such position as desired.
A further object of my invention is to provide a shutter fastener or bower, which is very plain in construction, and can be easily attached to any shutter to produce the desired result.
Figure 1, is a view in elevation illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2, is a plan view of my improved device holding the shutters in one of its several positions. Fig. 3, is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4, is a front elevation of a section of the bower showing the fastening means of the bower to the shutter. Fig. 5, is a vertical sectional View through Fig. 4:.
Referring to the drawing, 1 and 2 represent window shutters of the usual construc tion.
3 represents my improved shutter fastener or bower, and comprises two bars 4 and 5, which are hinged together at 6. The bar 41 is provided with an elongated slot 7 through which the bolt 8, which is fastened to the shutter 1, extends, and has screwed on its nd a wing nut o r thumb screw 9, which will an be held in any position on the shutter 2,
y allowing the screw 12 to be passed hrough the desired circular opening 10 in he bar 5, and then allow the bar to lower on the screw 12 in the cut out portion 11 at the top of the circular opening 10, thus placing the bar in one of its desired positions. The bar 5 of the bower is bent outward at its end as shown at 13.
The operation of my device is as follows. To hold the shutters in a bowed position such as is desired, manipulate the bower 3 by passing the screw head of screw 12 through the desired circular opening in bar 5, and lower the bower on the screw 12, which will rest in the out out portion 11 of the circular opening 10, and position the bar 5 on the shutter 2. The next step is to allow the bar 4 to move on the shutter 1, through the medium of the bolt 8 on the shutter 1, and slot 7 in the bar 4, and then screw the wing nut 9 on the bolt 8 tight against bar .4, fastening the bar 4 to shutter 1, when the shutters are in the desired position. To
lock the shutters, position the bower on shutters in their closed position, and then screw the wing nut 9 tight against bar 4:. When the shutters are open to a greater extent than the bower will allow, the bower will have the position as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
Slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not restrict myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In combination with a pair of shutters, a bolt projected through one of said shutters, a thumb nut on the inner end of said bolt, a
headed screw secured in the other shutter with its head disposed some distance from the face of the shutter, a shutter bower or fastener comprising two members hinged together, an elongated slot in one member positioned on the bolt and between the thumb nut and the face of the shutter, the other member of said fastener or bower having a series of openings, each opening of a diameter sufiiciently large to be passed over the head of the screw, and each opening having an upwardly projecting restricted recess or extension of a diameter too small to be passed over the head of the screw, but sufficiently large to receive the shank of the screw, whereby when said member is positioned over the screw, it will by its Weight fall to a position with the restricted portion of the o ening over the shank of the screw, substantlally as and for the purpose set I forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GRACE ERWIN.
