UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. GORDON, OF BEVERLY, OHIO.
IM PROVEMENT IN GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 197,846, dated December 4, 1877; application filed To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE W. GORDON,
of Beverly, in the county of Washington and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Farm-Gate; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which the figure is a side elevation.
The invention relates to a novel mode of unfastening the catch of a gate, from either side thereof, without dismounting from a horses back.
It will first be described in connection with I October 15, 1877.
r H, pivoted in the middle on a standard, I, that is supported upon the top rail of gate.
If a horseman comes on one side, he raises, and if on the other, he depresses, the lever, so as to raise the latches and unfasten the gate. He then can push with the lever until he has passed through the gate, and. can use the same means for closing it securely.
In practice, this device is found to be a very convenient attachment for farm-gates, saving much trouble and annoyance.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- I The combination, with a single lever, H,
pivoted at the middle over the gate, of the rod G, double hook F,-having eyes ff, pivoted latches E, and notched catch-bars D, all constructed and arranged in connection with a farm-gate, as and for the purpose specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 25th day of October, 187 5.
GEORGE W. GORDON. Witnesses:
