lM PROVEMENT IN GATES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 216,726, dated J une 24, 1879; application filed April 12, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS D. GRUMPTON, of Burlington, in the county of Des Moines and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements in gates; and it consists in the arrangement and adaptation of the parts. substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the annexed drawings, A refers to the latch-post, it being provided with a slot, a, (indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1,) to receive the latch a on the gate.

B is the gate, supported upon trucks or rollers b I), hung in pendants or plates 1), fastened to the bottom rail of the gate. These trucks or rollers, grooved in their peripheries, travel on a track, 0, fastened, in practice, to a sill sunk in the ground.

The gate B is supported in an upright position between two uprights, G O, planted in the ground or in a sill. Between the upper ends of the uprights U G is hung a flanged pulley, (7, against which the upper edge or rail ofthe gate bears, and which enables the holding of the gate centrally between said upright-s. The pulley d also lessens friction, and renders the sliding or opening and closing of the gate to be performed more easily.

To each side of the posts or uprights G are hung two pulleys, D D, whose axes or shafts bear in horizontal plates 0 e of vertical plates E, fastened to the uprights O.

F F are two other pulleys, one hung upon each side of the "forward end of the gate, directly over and to one side of the latch'a. The latch a ishung, by a hook or other suit able means, (1?, at its rear end, to the under side of the top rail of the gate, while its forward end projects through an elongated slot in the end piece of the gate, and sufficiently beyond the same end of the gate as that when the gate is closed its hook will, after having been passed through a similar slot, a, in the post A, catch against the outside of said post.

F is a cord or its equivalent, with its middle secured to the latch a, and thence passed over the pulleys F of the gate, around the lower-two of the pulleys D D of the uprights O, thence through staples or eyes f of two up rights, G, arranged short distances from the uprights (J. The cord is nextpassed around the upper two, D, of the pulleys D D, and then carried and fastened toa screw-eye, staple, or other suitable means secured to the rear end of the gate. Its ends may depend from the gate for convenience in enabling the grasping of the same to open and close the gate.

It willbe seen that as the cord F is pulled in opening the gate, the latch a simultane ously with the opening of the gate, will lift, and become detached from the post A, thus accomplishing a twofold purpose.

This gate is exceedingly simple, easily operated, and inexpensive.

I am aware of the patents to Ellison, July 20, 1869, and March 15, 1870, and I claim nothing therein shown; but,

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesl The combination, with the posts 0 G, having flanged pulley d, of the sliding gate B, the upper rail of which bears against said pulley d, and the lower rail of which is provided with casters I) 1), running upon a track, 0, and mechanism for operating said gate, substantial] y as herein described, for the purpose set forth.
