A. BUSSERT.
THRESHOLD.
No. 448,501; Patented Mar. 17,1891.
I All m UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ASHER BUSSERT, OF AMANDA, OHIO.
THRESHOLD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 448,501, dated March 17,1891. 1 A Application filed August 7, 1890- Serial No. 361,253. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ASHER BUSSERT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Amanda,in the county of Fairfield and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thresholds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying. drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in thresholds designed to be applied to the outside doors of houses to prevent the entrance of water underneath the door.
In the ordinary construction of doors for houses much annoyance is caused by the entrance of water underneath the same in times of storms, whereby the carpets and floors are injured or damaged. Many attempts have been made to provide means whereby this obj ection could be obviated, but all have proved more or less tmsuccessfuhowing to defects in construction and operation, the high cost of the devices, or other causes, whereby they have not been introduced into general public use.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, economical, efficient, and reliable threshold which can readily be applied to a door and which will effectually prevent the entrance of water in times of storms.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, and definitely pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective View of a door-frame and door with my improved threshold applied thereto. Fig. 2 is across-section through the center of the threshold, showing also the lower portion of a door. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the removable sill, looking from the under side. Fig. 4: is a detail perspective view of the trough.
In the said drawings, the reference-numeral 1 designates the floor of a house52 2, the upright side pieces of the door-frame; 3, the linte], and 4. the door, all of which may be of any ordinary or suitable construction.
beveled, as seen at 9 in Fig. 4. The object of making one portion of this trough Wider than the other is to receive and hold the removable or outer sill 10. This sill consists of a piece of Wood of a width equal to the width of the door-frame and has a horizontal top wall 12 and beveled front end 13, and is pro vided. with a projecting shoulder 14. at each side, which fits into the enlarged portion of the trough 8. The under side of this sill is provided with a series of longitudinal grooves 15, which extend from side to side thereof or entirely across the same.
The operation will be readily understood. The trough 8 is secured to the sill 5 by nails, screws, or other fasteners and the removable sill 10 inserted therein. Any water which may be driven under the door will escape between the flange 9 and sill 10, as there is a slight space between these parts, and will flow down and out through the grooves 15 on the under side of the sill 10, and thus be prevented from entering the floor or carpet.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- The combination, with a trough having an enlarged inner portion and upwardly-projecting flange, of a sill having horizontal top edge, beveled front, projecting shoulders at each side to fit in the enlarged portions of the trough, and horizontal grooves on its under side which extend entirely across the same, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ASHER BUSSERT.
Witnesses:
JAMES J ONES, EDWARD WULZER.
