To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, J ULIUS DE LONG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings andState of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Window-Ventilators, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates especially to devices designed to attach to windows for securing ventilation in apartments, and has for its object the provision of a simple, cheap and effective device whereby a space may be left between the meeting rails of sashes for the passage of air, the opening beneath the lower sash being effectually closed, and direct drafts of air avoided.

To attain the desired end, my invention consists essentially in a plate having a narrow flexible lip at the bottom edge, and a wide flexible lip projecting horizontally from the face of the plate near its upper edge, and means for removably securing said plate in a slanting position upon a window sill, all of which-will be hereinafter first fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective viewof a window showing my attachment as employed therewith; Fig. 2 is an enlarged, vertical sectional view at line wm of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is an enlarged face view of one of the plate holding devices or cleats, removed from the windowcasing. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a detached cleat.

1 is a plate, preferably made of thin wood. At the bottom is fixed a narrow projecting tongue 2, of flexible material. Near the upper edge of one of the faces of the said plate 1, is fixed a wide, projecting tongue 3, also made of flexible material. v

4 is a cleat or plate, preferably made of metal, said plate having projecting lips 5 and -6 extending diagonally across its face, as particularly illustrated in Fig. 3.

7 is a spring, fixed at its upper end, as at 8,

and projecting slightly into the space be tween the lips 5 and 6. When this cleat is made of metal, the center is cut through, and

one side turned'outward to form the lip 5; a portion of the other edge is turned outward to form the lip 6, and the remaining portion' on that side of the cut is .severed from the plate, with the exception of the upper part 8, thus forming the entire-cleat and spring of a single piece of metal, which may be readily attached to the sides of a window frame by means of nails or screws.

When the various parts of my device are assembled for use, and attached to a window, as illustrated in Fig. 1, the plate 1 is removably slipped into the holding devices or cleats 4, the springs 7 preventing any movement of said plate when the lower sash is raised. By giving .the plate 1 a sloping position, as illustrated, any lifting device, such as 9, attached to the lower sash may be readily reached by the hand, the wide flexible tongue 3'readily yielding to the fingers. When the lower sash is raised, as in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the space therebeneath is completely closed, while ample space is left between the meeting rails of the sashes for the admission of fresh air, the draft being thrown upwardinto the warm and vitiated atmosphere at the top of the apartment.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is:--

1. A window attachment, in which is comprised two slotted cleats, each provided with an outwardly projecting spring tongue, said cleats being secured to the sides of the window frame near the sill; and a sloping plate having a narrow flexible projecting lip at its lower edge, and a wide flexible lip near its upper edge, arranged to bear against the lower rail of a window sash, the whole combined and arranged to operate, substantially as shown and described.

2. In a device of the character herein specified, a plate, having a narrow flexible lip at the bottom edge, and a wide flexible lip projecting horizontally from the face of the plate near its upper edge, in combination with means for removably securing said plate in a slanting position upon a window sill, substantially as shown and described.

3. In a device of the character herein specified, the combination with the removable plate, of a slotted holding cleat provided with a securing spring projecting into the slot, substantially as shown and described.

4. In a device of the character herein specified, a slotted holding cleat, provided with a spring tongue projecting into the slot, substantially as, and for the uses and purposes set forth JULIUS DE LONG.
