Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
THOMAS F. MCEY, OF FRANKLIN, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR-SILLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 63,224, dated May 11, 1875; application filed March 17, 1875.
1'0 all whom it may concrn:
Be it known that I, THOMAS F. MCEY, of Franklin, in the county of J ohnson and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door and Window Sills, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the Construction and arrangement of a threshold or carpet-sill, which Will answer the purpose of a weather-strip, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the anneXed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of my threshold or sill, and Fig. 2 is a transverse Vertical section of the same.
A represents the threshold or sill, made of iron or any other suitable material, and designed to take the place and answer the purpose of the common wood carpet-sill, and at the same time to prevent the water from drifting through under the door. The ends of the sill A are constructed with suitable shoulders or offsets B B, to fit the jamb of the door. On
the top of the sill is a rise or ofi'set, C, which is designed to prevent the ingress oi' the water that will fall from the door upon the sill. D represents a gutter, made in the raised portion of the sill, for the purpose of catching all that portion of the water that may not be arrested by said rise or bench G on the sill, and Carry it again to the outside of the door by means of one or more small gutters, a, leading from the main gutt-er to the outside of the sill. This sill may be used in window-frames as well as for doors.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The sill A, provided with the longitudinal groove D and one or more transverse grooves, a, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The sill A, provided with the rise or offset 0, having lon gitudinal groove or gutter D, and one or more transverse grooves or gutters, a, leading outward from the main gutter, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 15th (lay of February, 1875.
T. F. MGEY.
