IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-HOLDERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,867, dated December 7, 1875; application'filed April 23, 1875.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, PETER LUGENBELL, of Greensburg, in the county of Decatur and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ,Window-. Sash Holders; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in a window-sash having its side rails made inclined or tapering, and one or more rubber rollers inserted in the lower right hand and upper left hand corners of the sash, so that thesash will bend and form wood bearings at the upper right hand and lower left hand corners, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of a window frame and sash embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a detached view of the corner of the sash with the roller therein.

. A represents an...ordinary window-frame, constructed in the usual manner, and B is the window-sash placed and moving therein. The side rails of the sash B are made inclined or tapering, as shown in Fig. 1, so that the up' per end of the right-hand rail is wider than the lower end, and the lower end of the lefthand rail is wider than the upper end. In the smaller or narrower end of each side rail of the sash B is made a recess to receive a rubber roller, 0, placed upon an axle, a, which has its bearings in a plate or frame, D, se-

cured to the sash. These'rollers. being on opposite sides of the sash, and at diagonally-opposite corners, the other corners b b of the sash bind against the frame, and thereby hold the sash at any height desired.

For raising the sash, the pressure must be applied on the right side, while for lowering the sash the pressure must be applied on the left side. In either case, the corners b b of the sash are released from contact with the frame, and the sash can be moved either up or down. As soon as the pressure is removed from the sash, the expansion of the rubber rollers O G at once causes the corners I) to bind again to hold the sash.

I am well aware that both rubber and metal rollers have been used in window-sashes to support the sainein the frame; but in all such cases heretofore known, the vertical bars of the sash have been on a straight line; hence the rollers are simply for the purpose of holding, and not for the purpose of locking, the sash. With my invention the sash is not only supported in the frame at any point desired, but is locked so that it cannot be raised or lowered without laterally pressing upon one side of the frame, inasmuch as the upper corner of one side, and the lower corner of the other side of the sash, forms a wood hearing by the means of the corners being forced into the frame.

I am further aware that it is not new to place a friction-roller of metal in opposite corners of a window-sash. With my invention a lateral pressure, adjacent to either of the rollers, will cause the same to contract and allow the sash to be relieved from the friction of the wood-points, so that it will freely be moved either up or down.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination, with an ordinary straight window-frame, A, of the sash B, having its side rails tapering in opposite directions, and the flexible rollers U G inserted in the smaller or narrower ends of the side rails, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
