'NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK J. MONZ, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE SARGENT & COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
DOOR-*K-NOB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 651,552, dated June 12, 1900."
Application filed March 5 1900. Serial No. 7,399. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK J. MONZ, a citizen of the United States, residing in New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Knobs, whereof the following is a full, clear, and exact description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a pa t thereof.
My invention relates to the construction and arrangement of the knob-shank and of the knob-shel1,whereby the same may be conveniently fastened together without the in tervention of a separate fastening device.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the inner half of the knobshell secured to the knob-shank,'the outer portion of the knob shell being omitted. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same through the line 00 00. Fig. 3 is a section of the same parts before the two are united.
In all figures similar letters of reference represent like parts.
The knob-shank is constructed, as shown in Fig. 3, with ashoulder at a near one end and a circular neck 1) projecting therefrom. Otherwise the knob-shank is of the ordinary construction.
The knob-shell, which may be of sheet metal, is constructed at its corresponding parts with a sleeve fitting over the neck b and an annular flange at right angles thereto fittingdown upon the shoulder a. The neck b projects slightly beyond the sleeve on the knob-shell. This portion of the neck b,which extends above the sleeve of the knob-shell, is now pressed outward and downward over the end of the sleeve, so as to hold the bearing-surfaces firmly together. This operation may be performed by swaging, and it results in a very firm and secure union of the knob shank and shell without the intervention of any independent fastening device.
Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-"- In combination with the shank A, having the shoulder ct and neck I) at right angles to .each other, of a knob-shell B, having a corresponding flange and sleeve adapted to fit over and upon said surfaces at and b; the end of the neck I) being bent outward and down ward over the end of the sleeve on the knob shell, so as to hold the said bearing-surfaces together, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of February, 1900.
