DEIBBR KNOB ATTAGHME Patented May 30, 1893.

PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM E. DEIBERT, OF SHAMOKIN, PENNSYLVANIA.
KNOB ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent Application filed August 4, 1892.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM E. DEIBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shamokin, in the county of Northumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Door-Knob, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in door knobs, and refers particularly to the spindles by which the door knobs are connected, and the means of connecting the knobs to said spindles.
My invention is described in detail in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the novel features thereof are particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawingsz-Figure 1 is a side view showing two knobs, connected by a spindle, one of said knobs being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a detail View of one of the shanks. Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the sections of the spindle, and Fig. 4. is a similar view of the other section of the spindle.
A A designate the knobs, provided with shouldered recesses, B B,in which are inserted the outer ends of the hollow shanks, G C, said shanks being provided at one side with a boss, D, and at the opposite side with a recess, E, of which the object is stated hereinafter. Each shank is secured in the recess of its knob by means of wedges, soft metal, or in any other approved manner and is provided with a collar. to bear against the surface of the knob. The shanks are provided with square bores, in which fit respectively the ends of the spindle, F, the latter being formed in two separable sections, ff, each of which is triangular in cross-section, and is carried by one of the shanks. The sections of the spindle are provided, each, with a hook,G, at one end, which engages the recess E in the outer end of the shank, and said sections are further provided, at corresponding points with serrations 0r teeth, H, which are in contact when the sections are fitted at their ends in the bores of the shanks. A set-screw, K, mounted in one of the shanks impinges at its inner end against one of the sections to hold said serrated portions in contact and thus lock the sections of the No. 498,244, dated May 30, 1893.
Serial No. 442,132. (No model.)
adjustment. The outer side of the section, which is engaged by said set-screw, is pro vided with a series of depressions or sockets, L L, which receive the end of said screw.
From the abovedescription it will be understood that the spindle comprises two independent, separable triangular sections, one of which is secured permanently to each knob the free end of each section fitting to slide in the shank of the other knob. Said sections are capable of longitudinal adjustment to lengthen or shorten the spindle to suit doors of different thicknesses, and the parts or members are firmly locked in their adjusted positions by the simple and effective means above described. These locking means are applied and operated without the perforation of the sections of the spindle, thus avoiding the weakening of such parts. The sections are superficially roughened or serrated upon their inner or contacting sides, being those sides corresponding with hypotenuses of the triangular sections, and one of the sections is provided with shallow depressions L to receive the inner end of the set screw.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. The combination with knobs having shouldered recesses B, of hollow shanks O fitting in said recesses and provided with bosses D and notches E, and a spindle comprising longitudinal sections each provided at one end with locking means to engage one of the shanks whereby one of the sections is secured to each knob, and means to secure the sections of the spindle together, substantially as specified.
2. The combination with knobs having shouldered recesses, and hollow angular-bored shanks fitting at their outer ends in the recesses and provided with bosses to engage the same, of a sectional spindle comprising separable longitudinal members or parts each of which is permanently secured at one end to one of the shanks and fits loosely at the other end in the bore of the other shank such members or parts being superficially serrated shank at the desired or roughened upon their contacting faces, f my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in and a set screw carried by one of the shanks the presence of two witnesses. to engage the surface of one of the members 01' parts at its free end, and hold such serrated WILLIAM E. DEIBERT. 5 or roughened surfaces in contact, substan- Witnesses:
tially as specified. B. F. BOUGHNER,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as JOHN J. CAMPTON.
