NUT-LOCK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 354,868, dated December 21, 1886.

To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LEROY 'B. LOWMAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Kempton, in the county of Tipton and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification. My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in nut-locks; and it consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as shown in the accompanying drawings and set forth in the following specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a nut-lock which will securely hold the nut upon the bolt, so as to prevent the same turning.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figurel is a sectional view of a bolt and nut, showing my invention applied thereto, said bolt and nut being employed to hold the fish-plates of a railroad rail in place. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a bolt, nut, and key detached from each other. Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken through the line or a; of Fig. 4.

A refers to the bolt, which is screw-threaded at one end in the usual manner, said screwthreaded portion being bisected by a recess, a, which terminates at the smooth body portion of the bolt, said recess being in turn bisected by a transverse recess, a, thus providing the bolt with a substantially T- shaped groove, within which is adapted to be placed, so as to lie below thethreads, a key, B, which is provided with a crossed portion, b, which will lie within the recess a of the boltA. The key B, as shown in the accompanying drawings, is of sufficient length to project beyond the end of the bolt when placed in the recess. By providing the key B with a cross-piece, b, which is formed integral therewith, said key will be held securely in positionwhen the bolt is inserted Fig. 4 is a side view of the bolt, and

through the openingsin the parts which it is desired to connect-with each other, and being below the plane of the threads said key will not interfere with the nut being turned upon the threaded portion.

The nut O is provided on its outer face with a raised portion, 0, which is bisected by a series of grooves, 0, so that when the nut is screwed upon the bolt the end of the key may be bent at right angles, so as to lie within one of the recesses o of the nut, so as to prevent the nut turning upon the bolt, so as to securely lock the nut and bolt to each other.

I am aware that prior to my invention it has been proposed to recess both sides of a bolt and perforate the bolt at theterminal portions of said recess, so that a wire loop may be passed through the bolt for looking a nut having a grooved face in position upon the bolt, and I do not therefore claim such construction, broadly, as the perforation through the bolt is difficult to make, and when made will weakensaid bolt, so that it will be liable to break at such perforation, and also that the loop will have a tendency to spring outwardly, so as to render it difficult to insert the bolt in the opening.

I am also aware that it has been proposed to provide a bolt with a longitudinal recess which bisects the threaded portion,the base of said recess having a cavity which extends toward the center of the bolt, so as to secure the end of a locking-bar, and I do not therefore claim such as my invention; but

What I claim as new, and desire to secure I by Letters Patent, is

'Thecombination, substantially as before set forth, of the threaded bolt provided with a longitudinal groove terminating at its inner end in a transverse groove cut across the surface of the bolt-shank, a key terminating at its inner endin a cross-head shaped to snugly fit the transverse groove in the bolt-shank, and a nut having its outer face grooved radially to receive the outer end of'the key.
