LOCK-WASHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 2, 1915.
Application filed October 24, 1913. Serial No. 796,982.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HARVEY J. HIPPLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Look- IVashers, of which the following is a specifi-. cation, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a lock-washer, such as is used with bolts or cap-screws, and it comprises a combination of locking means which may be used independently or together, as found most desirable and convenient, depending upon the application of the bolt or cap-screw.
While I am aware that both have before been employed for this purpose, I have a keyway which is engaged by a lock-washer as shown in Letters Patent No. 1,049,234, granted to me on December 81, 1912.
lhe object of the invention is to provide a combination lock-washer which used with a bolt provided with a longitudinal keyway may be used to retain either a square or hex head nut of the ordinary type as well as the castellated nut.
Another object of the invention is to provide a lock-washer that shall be cheap and durable, and capable of repeated wear.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain constructions and combinations of parts as will hereinafter be fully described and claimed in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application; and in which like figures of reference refer to corresponding parts in all of the views; but it is fully understood that while I have here described my device as shown, that I do not confine myself to the exact design, as slight changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the several parts without dearting from the spirit of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
In the drawings :Figure 1, is a side elevation of a bolt, showing my improved washer as applied to a castellated nut. Fig. 2, is a similar view, showing the application to a square head nut. Fig. 3, is an end view of the lock-washer removed from the bolt. Fig. 4, is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 5, shows a washer upon which threads are cut by the nut.
Referring to the drawings, the device comprises in combination with a'bolt l, having a longitudinal keyway 2, and provided with a nut 3, of a lock-washer having a bolt enclrcling portion 4, terminating at one end in a projecting portion 5, lying in the keyway and extending beyond the end of the bolt; while the other end extends outward on the same plane as the portion 4-, and is bent back upon itself as at 6, and the end then extending at right angles and entering the keyway as at 7. g
In use the nut is turned down upon the portion 4, which acts as a washer and cushioning means between the nut and the object to be fastened. The portion 6, is then bent up against one of the faces of the nut; and the portion 5, is bent downward into one of the notches in a castellated nut, or if a plain nut is used this portion 5, may be cut off, if desired. For removing the nut, the portions 5, and 6, are bent back to their original positions, allowing the nut to be removed from the bolt.
As a further means of keeping the nut tight upon the bolt, and as shown in Fig. 5, I construct the washer from semi-soft material and of a slightly greater diameter in cross-section than the depth of the slot in the bolt, so that when the nut is screwed or turned down upon the bolt it will cut out portions of thread upon the straight portion of the washer which lies in the keyway to correspond and register with the threads upon the bolt, and in this manner all longitudinal movement of the washer with respect to the bolt is prevented.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a lock-washer of the class described, the combination with a bolt having a keyway, of a washer formed with a bolt encircling portion, a keyway engaging portion, and an extending portion adapted to be bent against the side of a nut, and an extending portion adapted to be bent into engagement with the notches of a cast-ellated nut, for the purpose of preventing the nut from turning on the bolt.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a bolt having a longitudinal keyway, a threaded nut engaging the same, a locking device comprising a strip of malleable material surrounding the bolt and having one end engaging the keyway and projecting from the end of the bolt, and
adapted to be bent into engagement with the castellation of the nut, and the other end extending outwardly at right angles to the bolt forming a loop adapted to be bent into engagement with one of the faces of the nut, and the return end ofsaid loop engaging the key'way in the bolt. 7
3. In a device of the class described, the
combination of a'bolt having a longitudinal keyway, a threaded nut engaging the same, of a locking device comprising a strip of malleable material surrounding the bolt and having a body-portion lying in said keyinto one of the ca'stellations of said nut.
