. A. G. GOLDING.
UTTER DISH. No. 251,214.. 3 Patented Dec. 20,1881.
BY M .1 7 w/ 7 ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ASA e. GOLDING, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
BUTTER-DISH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,214, dated December 20, 1881.
Application filed October 20, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ASA G. GOLDING, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Butter-Dishes, of which the following is a specification.
Referenceis to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improvement, the cover being removed. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same, taken through the line a m, Fig. 1.
The object of this invention is to protect the decorated bottom of butter-dishes from injury while allowing the said decorations to be seen.
Theinvention consists in a butter-dish made with an interior plate-supporting flange, whereby the said plate will be supported out of.contact with the bottom of the dish; also, in the plate-supporting flange made with its upper side inclined downward toward the sides of the dish, and with drip-holes formed through it; also, in the combination, with the dish-body having interior plate-supporting flange and the plate, of a cap-ring, whereby the edge of the said plate will be covered and concealed and also in the combination, with the body and the top of the dish and the cap-ring, of the top flange, whereby the said cap-ring is supported and kept in place, as will be hereinafter iully described.
A represents the body of the dish, the inner; surface of the bottom of which is designed to be decorated by being painted or in any other desired manner.
Upon the inner surface of the sides of the body A, at a little distance above its bottom, is formed, or to it is attached, a shoulder or flange, B, which can be made continuous or in segments of greater or less length. The upper surface of the flange B inclines downward toward the sides of the body A, to fOZIll a chain nel to receive the drip-water which escapes through holes 0 formed through the said flange.
Dis 2.- glass plate, which rests upon the flange B, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the decorations upon the bottom of the dish will be protected against injury, while they can be seen through the plate D.
Around the top of the body A is formed an (No model.)
upright ring-flange, E, upon which rests a loose ring, F. The ring F is made in U form in cross-section, as shown in Fig. 2. The inner edge of the ring F rests upon the upper side of the edge of the glass plate D, so as to cover and conceal the edge of the said plate, and has notches G formed in it to allow the drip-water to pass freely to and around the edge of the plate D and escape through the holes 0 in flange B into the lower part of the dish.
The outer edge of the ring F rests upon the outer flange or top, H, of the dish. If desired, the dish can be made without the upright ringfiange, E, in which case the flange B should be at a distance below the top H of the dish A a little greater than the thickness of the glass plate D, so that the inner part of the cap-ring F can rest against the body A of the dish, and can thus be kept in place.
- The dish is provided with a cover, I, in the ordinary manner.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent? 1. An improved butter-dish having an annular inclined flange secured to inner surface a short distance above its bottom, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a butter-dish, the combination, with the body A, of the inclined flange B, secured to the inner surface of the said body a short distance above its body, and provided with the perforations G, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a butter-dish, the combination, with the body A, provided with the interior flange, B, and the plate D, of the cap-ring F, provided with notches G on its inner edge, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a butter-dish, the combination, with the body A and top H of the dish and the cap ring F, of the top flange, E, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the said ringis supported and kept in place, as set forth.
The above specification of my improvement in butter-dishes signed by me this 28th day of September, 1881.
ASA G. GOLDING. Witnesses:
JAMES T. GRAHAM, -(J. SEDGWICK.
