l y UNITED STATES PATENT OiuaIcE..v j j HENRY BERRY, OF HUNTINGTON, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR `'IO THE DERBY SILVER COMPANY, YOF SAME PLACE.
BUTTER-DlsH:
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.284,531, dated September 4, 1883.`
` Application nieu July it, 1883. (No model.)
llo all whom it may concern,.- VBe itl known that I, HENRY BERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Huntington, inthe county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Butter-Dishes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and usethe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to Aletters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and is a vertical section. Fig. 2 is a topview without the cover, and
shows part of the drainer-plate broken away.-`
-This invention hasrelation to metallic butter-dishes; and it consists in spinning from the upper portion ofthe rim-wall an internal wall and supporting-ledgefor the drainer, and in the construction and novel arrangementof the earthenware drainer, having a convex bottoni and rim-wall surrounding the same, an annular supporting-rib on its under side, and draining-perforations extending through the bottom just within the annular rib,. all as hereinafter set forth. v
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the metallic base of the butter-dish, and B the upper portion of its rim-wall, which is spun inwardlyr and downwardly to form an inner rim-wall, c, and a supporting-ledge,V d.
E represents an earthenware drainer-plate, of circular form, adapted to rest on the ledge d, and having on its under side a-rib, g, which is of annular form, and, when the plate is in position, extends downward into the opening within the annular ledge d. The plate E is formed with a convex'bottom, h., and with a rim,\k, surrounding the same and extending upward sufficiently to rise alittle above the marginal portion- Z of the metallic base A. Draining perforations m are made through the bottom of the plate E,within and near its annular under rib, g. The plate E is designed to be handsomely decorated, and will present an attractive appearance. above that of 'theV metallic base in which it is seated, the edge of the latter will not be scratched or marred by the use of the butterknife. The under rib, g, serves to hold the plate steadily in the base, besides affording a upport for the plate when removed from the ase.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
l. A metallic butter-dish base having `the upper portion of its rim-wall spun downward and inward to provide an internal rim-wall, @fand annular ledge d, to support the butterplate, substantially as specified.
f2. The combination with a metallic butterdish base, A, having an internal annular ledge,
d, of an earthernware butter-plate, E, havingk As its rimis raised a convex bottom and rim-wall surrounding the same, an annular under rib, g, and drainagef perforations m, extendingthrough the bottom, just within the annular rib, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. y
\ HENRY BERRY.
