Butter-Holder for Butter-Dishes- No. 226,666. Patented April 20,1880.
iii" LL MW 1 ILELL EMU N. PETERS, PHOTO-LITHDGRAFHER, WASHINGTON u u.
UNITED STATES PATENT CFFIGE.
WILLIAM R. MACKAY, OF MEItIDEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE MERIDEN SILVER PLATE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
BUTTER-HOLDER FQR BUTTER-DISHES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,666, dated April 20, 1880.
Application filed March 13, 1880. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known thatI, WILLIAM R. IVIACKAY, of Meriden, county of New Haven, State of Connecticut, havefinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Butter-Holders for Butter-Dishes; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description and specification of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part thereof.
My invention relates to means for securing the disk, of glass or such like material, forming the bottom of the movable butter-holder of a butter-dish, so that it may be easily and readily removed for the purpose of cleansing it.
The glass plate has heretofore been fastened permanently in the flanged rim of the butter-holder, or laid loosely in some such holder, in which case it is liable to be lost or broken.
My invention consists in certain combinations of parts or elements set forth specifically in the claim at the end of this schedule.
In order that persons skilled in the art may understand, make, and use my improvements, I will proceed to describe the same, referring to the drawings herewith, in whieh- Figure l is a top view of my movable butter-holder, showing the glass bottom piece centrally located in it, surrounded by drip-holes in the flanged rim. A part of this flanged rim is broken away to show a horizontal part section of the flange which surrounds the glass bottom plate, and also the fastening and holding piece outside and under it. Fig. 2 is a part side view and part section of the same on line a r, Fig. 1, showing the glass bottom B not sectioned. Fig. 4 is a bottom view, with a small part of the flange surrounding the glass bottom and the holding-ring in horizontal section. Fig. 3 is a part side View and part section on a vertical diameter line of another t'orm of holdil'ig-piece.
The same letters of reference indicate like parts in the different figures.
a is the flanged rim of my movable butterholder; B, the glass bottom plate C, the flange, projecting below the body a and fixed to it, of a diameter larger than the hole in a,
so as to leave a slight horizontal projection above the glass bottom plate to hold it from rising out of its position. Flange C extends downward about the thickness of the glass bottom plate, B.
D is the fastening-ring, which shuts over and around the flange C, to which it is fastened by means of the slot H in ring D and pin F in flange C. This holding-piece may have an opening in its bottom, as shown in Fig. 4, leaving only a slight shoulder, J, to hold the glass in place, or it may be made solid without any opening, as in Fig. 3, in which case the bottom may be engraved or embossed with figures or designs on its inner surface.
The holes 9 g g in the flat surface of the rim a outside of the flange C are drip-holes to carry water below the glass bottom plate and keep the butter dry.
My movable butter-holder with its glass bottom attached is designed to be placed within a butter-dish case, which case is not shown.
The glass bottom presents a hard surface for thebutter to rest upon, so that in cutting the butter the bottom will not be cut or marred, as in the case of a metal bottom.
When the glass bottom is permanently fastened to the movable butterholder butter gets in between the metal plate and glass, and the salt from the butter oxidizes the metal; but by my construction the two can be separated and washed, so that no oxidation need take place.
Having now fully described. my improvements and the manner in which I have embodied them, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In the movable butter-holder ot' a but-terdish, the combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, of the rim a, provided with a downwardly-projecting flange surrounding a glass bottom plate, and the removable fastening ring or piece, all constructed and arranged to operate in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
WILLIAM R. MACKAY.
