No. 195,325, Patented Sept.18,1877-.
w W MM R 3 m N T E A M A w k c F N. PETERS, PHGTQUTNDGHAPHER. WASHING UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
CHARLES A. BAILEY, OF COBALT, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN COFFlN-HANDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195,325, dated September 18, 1877; application filed August 10, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHAS. A. BAILEY, of Cobalt, in the county of Middlesex, and in the State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coffin-Haudles and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification. I
The nature of my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of a joint for coffin-handles or other articles, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and definitely claimed.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure l is a front view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the same through the line at m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front view of the plate or casting, partly in section.
A represents the plate or casting, formed with a vertical slot, at, and projecting ears b on both sides thereof. d is a wire, cast solid into the cars 11 b across the slot or.
B represents the arm or lever, cast with a round aperture, h, at the outer end. At the inner end this arm or lever is cast with a slanting slot, 11, so that when one end of the arm is brought down below the bottom surface of the ear and hooked on the wire d, and then brought up to place, the plate A can then be screwed onto anything, and the arm cannot get out of place.
This invention may be applied to coffinhandles or any other object where the same may be useful.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the plate A, having slot at and ears b b, with wire d cast solid therein, and the arm B, cast with the inclined or slanting slot '0' at its inner end, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 6th day of July, 1877.
CHAS. A. BAILEY.
