UNITED STATE PATENT OFFICE.
EDMUND KUI'IN, OF NEV ALBANY, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO ED\VARD SCANLAN, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
DEVICE FOR CASTING HOOKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 450,757, dated April 21, 1891.
Application filed January 17, 1891- .Serial No. 878,143. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDMUND KUHN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Albany, in the county of Floyd, State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Casting Hooks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. a
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in devices for casting hooks or catches upon articles, such as fender-rails, foot-rails for stoves, and other devices, which require a catch to hold them in place.
The objects and advantages of the inven tion will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the pattern in the sand. Fig. 2 is a central section through the tool which forms the catch in the mold. Fig. 3 is a perspective of the said tool removed. Fig. 4 shows a portion of the casting.
Like letters of reference indicatelike parts in the different views in which they are shown.
In the said drawings, A designates the pattern, which is provided with a shoulder a, beyond which is a lug h, as seen clearly in Fig. 1. In practice this pattern is placed in the sand B, as indicated in Fig. 1. \Vhen the impression has been made, the pattern is removed and the tool 0 is placed in the depression formed by the said pattern, as seen in Fig. 2. This tool consists of a tapered tubular or cylindrical metal portion, the metal of which at one side is extended to form a handle 0, by which the tool may be manipulated. The smaller end is provided with a slot d and the larger end with a slot c, as shown in Fig. 2. The tubular body of the tool conforms in contour with the pattern, so that it will just fill the opening made by the pattern in the sand. W'ithin the body of the tool are the lugs or ears f, between which is pivoted 011 the transverse pins g, held in said ears or lugs, the lever B, one end of which extends through the slot in the larger end of the body of the tool, as seen in Fig. 2, and the other end extends through the slot in the smaller end of said body, as seen in the same figure, and is there formed with a hook h, as seen in Figs. 2 and 3, which is designed to form the catch in the completed casting. Between the hook and the bottom or smaller end of the body of the tool the lever is formed with shoulders i, as seen best in Fig. 3, which serve as guides to insure the movement of the lever in a straight line. Arranged within the body of the tool is a spring D, which serves to normally'force the lower or hook end of the lever in the position in which it is shown in full lines in Fig. 2. The lever is provided with a bulge or teat 7;, as seen in Fig. 2, which engages the inner wall of the body of the tool and prevents the hook end of the lever being thrown back far enough to make a depression in the sand with its rear face, which would destroy the contour of the finished casting. The completed casting is shown in Fig. 4.
The operation will be apparent from the above description, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, and a detailed description thereof is not deemed necessary.
Various modifications in detail may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages. For instance, the upper or larger end of the body of the tool may be entirely open instead of having acover provided with a slot, as above described,
\Vhat I claim as new is- 1. A tool for the purpose described, consisting of a body portion and a lever pivoted therein and projecting at its ends, being provided at one end with a shouldered hook and near the other end within the body portion with a bulge or teat, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The tool described, consisting of the tapered tubular body portion having a handle,
the lever pivoted within the body portion and projecting therethrough at each end, formed at one end with a hook and shoulders and near the other end Within the body portion with a bulge 0r teat, and a spring within the body portion acting on the lever, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDMUND KUHN.
