Description
UNITED STATES PATENT Orrroaa EDWARD A.'OOOPER, OF LANCASTER, ASSIGNOR TO PRATT & LETOHVVORTH, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGE-STEPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,284, dated April 18, 1876; application tiled March 6, 1876.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD A. COOPER, of Lancaster, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriage-Steps, which improvements are fully set forth in the following spccication, reference being had to the accompanying drawin g.
The object of my invention is to overcome these diliiculties;v and it consists of the peculiar construction of the carriage-step, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved step, with the body-loop and a portion of the body in section. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the step. Fig. 3 is a top plan view thereof.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in each of the igures.
A represents a portion of the Wooden body or box of the buggy, wagon, or other vehicle. B represents one ofthe metallic body-loops to which the boX A is secured by bolts b. O represents the plate of the step, which may be of any suitable shape, and D the shank cast in one piece therewith. The shank D is made of angular form, and provided at' its lower end 'with a plate, d, adapted to be secured to the under side of the body-loop B, and provided with bolt-holes through which pass the fastening-bolts b. The shank is preferably provided on its under side with a strengthening-rib, d. e represents the guard-plate, cast with the step-plate O at its rear end, so as to project upwardly and prevent the feet from coming in contact with the wood-Work, thereby preventing the distguration of the latter. The distance between the plate d and the upper surface of the horizontal portion of the bent shank D is equal to the height of the body-loop B, so that When the plate d is secured to the under side of the body-loop the shank D will bear with its horizontal portion under the projecting portion of the Woodwork, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
My improved step is readily secured to the vehicle in a most substantial and durable manner without requiring any additional boltholes to be formed in the wooden body of the vehicle, thus forming a stronger and heater step than heretofore produced.
What I claim as my invention is- A carriage-step composed of a tread, C, bent shank D, guard e, and horizontal plate, d, formed in one piece and adapted to be sccured in position, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
E. A. COOPER. Witnesses:
EDWARD WILHELM, OHAs. J. BUcKHnrr.
