PLANT HOLDER.
No. 525,644. Patented Sept. 4, 1894.
15 YEA 7'02 WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SETH WILLIAM BAEEITT, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT.
PLANT-HOLDER.
. SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 525,644, dated September 4, 1894.
Application filed June 8, 1894. Serial No. 513,858. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SETH WILLIAM BAB- BITT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plant-Hold? ers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improvement in plant holders, and it consists in the construction andarrangement of parts hereinafter described and definitely pointed out in the claims.
The aim and purpose of theinvention is the provision of an improved receptacle adapted more especially for holding plants such as ferns or the like, so constructed and arranged that the same may be quickly cleaned and the plant readily removed and transported when attendance is required, without disfiguring or soiling the exposed portions of the holder. This object is attained by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the holder. Fig. 2 is a central sectional view. Fig. 3 is a detail view of a section of the supporting rim, and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the rim.
In the drawings A represents the outer vessel or dish having suitably embellished perpendicular sides and provided with the feet B. This vessel is preferably made of metal.
0 represents the pot or inner vessel which is of a depth less than the depth of the outer vessel and is formed of any suitable material. The pot C has a central opening 0 in its base and an annular flange D at its top extending out atright angles to a point beyond the sides of the outer vessel.
E is a detachable supporting rim composed of two like sections 6 e united by hinged joints E having removable pintles e which are provided with suitable handles e On the lower member of the hinges are eyes F through which suitable handles f pass. The hinges, handles and eyes are located on the outer edge of the rim so that the handles will extend down on the outside of the outer vessel when the rim is in place.
On the lower inner face of the rim is a metal ring G U-shape in cross section forming a horizontal groove g which extends entirely around the inner edge of the rim. This groove is preferably formed by the upper horizontal flange g and the lower parallel flange g from the inner edge of which depends an apron or flange G which rests against the sides of the inner vessel O and fills the space between the upper portions of the two vessels thereby holding the Inner vessel from independent lateral movement. The groove g is formed to conform in depth and width to the thickness and breadth of the flange D on the vessel (3 so that the latter will closely fit therein when the rim is ad usted. When the plant is planted in the pot or vessel 0 the rim E is adjusted on the flange D and the pintle of one of the joints, which has been previously removed, is replaced, locking the rim on the inner vessel. The 1nner vessel is then placed in the outer vessel, the edges of which contact with the under face of the flangeg and the vessel 0 is thereby supported within the outer vessel, so that the bottom of'the vessels are out of contact.
When it is desired to cleanse the inner vessel or to remove the contents thereof without injuring or defacing the outer vessel or rim, it is only necessary to remove the inner vessel by grasping the handles; the rim may then be quickly removed by withdrawing one or both of the pintles from the hinged joints. By forming the handles on the hinged sections a substantial support and attachment is secured.
It is to be understood that the receptacle or holder above described may be used for purposes other than holding plants, as for instance by making the bottom of the inner vessel imperforate the same may be used for a liquid or semi-liq id.
I am aware that slight changes can be made in the construction herein shown and described without in the least departing from the nature and principle of my invention.
Having thus described the invention, what isclaimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with an outer vessel, of
an inner vessel, and a detachable rim on the inner vessel formed in sections, and means for detachably uniting the sections, substantially as described.
4. The combination with an outer vessel, of an inner vessel having a flange on its upper edge, a detachable sectional rim having a horizontal groove in which the flange fits, and means for detachably uniting the sections of the rim, substantially as described.
5. The combination with an outer vessel,of an 'inner vessel having a flange at its upper edge, a sectional rim having a horizontal groove therein in which the flange fits, a hinged joint between the sections of the rim, removable pintles for the joints, and handles secured on the lower sections of the hinges, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
, SETH WILLIAM BABBITT.
