CHlMNEY-CAP.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581,505, dated April 27, 1897.

Application led October 8, 1896. Serial No. 608,195. (No model.)

Be it known that I, FEED BARKER, a citizen of the United States, residingin Paterson, county of Passaic, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney-Tops and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon', which form a part of this specification.

The object of my present invention is to provide a chimney cap or top of simple,strong, and durable construction, and which chimney-top, besides forming an ornament for the chimney, will protect the bricks and prevent water from dropping on projections of or mold.- ings formed on the top part of the chimney.

The invention consists in the improved chimney-top, its clamping-springs, and in the combination and arrangement of the various parts thereof, substantially as will be hereininafter more fully described, and finally embodied in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of the top portion of a chimney provided with my improved cap, certain portions being broken away and others shown in section; and Fig. 2, a top plan view of Fig. l.

In said drawings, a a represent a chimney of ordinary construction, and CZ the llue therein. The chimney is topped off, as at b and c, to fit the inner shape of the cap e. `The said cap c is preferably made of cast metal, and is provided with a central opening m to correspond in size and shape to the flue d.

The top portion of the cap is fiat, as at f, and isprovided with a downwardly-tapering projecting flange g of a size sufficient to project beyond any ornamental portion (such as a) of the chimney. rlhe edge of said projecting flange is cut off at right angles to the surface g thereof, and connects by means of the concave channel 71 with the downwardlyextending portion 7o of the cap e, which latter is adapted to fit over and onto the sides of the chimney. To the inner edge of the flat portion f of the cap e are secured, by bolts or screws 0 or in any desired manner, a series of flat spring-plates n, extending into the flue of the chimney and adapted to bear against the bricks to thus strengthen the same, be-v sides securely holdin the cap in position should the same not fit exactly the circumference of the chimney.

In the drawings one spring-plate is arranged in the center of each side of the cap, but it will be manifest that a series of such spring-plates can be used instead without departing from the spirit of my invention.

By having the top of the chimney topped off, as at b c-that is to say, iiat and taperingand having said top to iit the inner shape of the cap e an additional hold is secured by the said cap upon the brickwork.

I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isf The combination of a chimney having its outer top edges beveled and a cap therefor made of a single piece of cast metal Aand comprising a thin cap-plate provided with an opening having its sides flush with the sides of the chimney-line, said cap-plate being shaped to rest squarely upon all of the surfaces formed by beveling the top edges of the chimney, a band extending downwardly from the capplate approximately one-half the length of its diameter so as to constitute an outside securing means for the cap, a flange surrounding the band and having a concave under surface and an inclined upper surface which merges into the top surface of the capplate, and iiat spring-plates secured to the sides of the cap-plate opening and extending downwardly into, and against the sides of, the chimney-liuc substantially as far as the lower edge of the flange, so as to constitute an inside securing means for the cap, substantially as described.
