- INVENTOB:

N. PETERS, PHOTO-LITNOGRAPHER, WASn'mGTON,
UNITED STATES ATENT QFFICEQ LEWIS H. RAYMOND, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BOAT-PLUG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,547, dated October 19, 1880. Application filed August 24, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEWIS H. RAYMOND, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Boat- Plng, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide anew and improved boat-plug which is simple in construction, self-acting, safe, and reliable, and which cannot get lost or out of order.
The invention consists of a plate attached to the bottom of the boat over an aperture in the same, and provided with a perforated neck having an external thread to receive a cap on the upper side, and with a hinged,
valve on the bottom side, this valve being protected by a suitable cage.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved boat-plug, showing the cap screwed down upon the same. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional elevation of the same on the line 00 as, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the under side of the valve and the cage protecting it.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A metal plate, A, is provided with an externally-threaded neck, 13, having a central aperture, (J, and a ring of like apertures, D, in its top E, and this plate A is firmly attached to the bottom F of the boat above an aperture, G, in the same.
The inner sides of the neck B are beveled, so asto form a true valve-seat for a valve, H, which may be made of cork, wood, rubber, metal, or any other suitable material, and is held by a ring, J, which passes around it, and
r is hinged to the under side of the plate A in such a manner that it can drop down, or can be pressed against the beveled seat formed by the inner side of the neck-B.
A cage, K, is attached to the under side of the bottom F of the boat, for the purpose of protecting the valve H from injury.
A cap, L, provided with a central stud, M, fitting into the apertureO, is threaded internally, so that it can be screwed upon the neck B.
apertures (J and D D, and at the same time keeping the valve H open by means of the stud M of the cap L, so that the same cannot be jammed in its seat by the pressure of the water, which acts with considerable force upon the said valve.
When the boat is taken out of the water the cap L is removed, the valve is open, and the water that may have collected or will collect flows off; but it may happen that the cap L becomes lost in the excitement that follows an accident, and if the boat were to be lowered into the water the same would enter into the boat if the valve H had not been provided, which valve is closed by the pressure of the water as soon as the bottom of the boat touches the water, but drops as soon as the boat is raised out of the water.
The valve H may easily be replaced by another in case it becomes worn out or broken, for the valve is held entirely by the hinged ring J, and is prevented from swelling by this rin g.
There is also a decided advantage in having a series of small apertures in the top plate, E, of the neck B, for if the cap L should become lost audthe valve H should break these small apertures can be closed muchmore easily and more effectually than onelarge opening.
The perforated plate E acts as a strainer and prevents small pieces of wood or other articles that may clog the valve from coming in contact with the same.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as-new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a boat-plug, the valve H, constructed substantially as herein shown and described, with a binding-ring, J, hinged to the bottom of the plug-plate A, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the perforated boat-bottom F, of the hinged valve H and the cage K, substantially as herein shown and described.
LEWIS H. RAYMOND. Witnesses:
