- GUET 0R. COLLAR PASTENING. No. 250,268. Patented Nov. 29,1881.
i UNITED STATES l MAHLON LOOMIS, OF LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR I O CHARLES S.
PATENT OFFICE.
HORN, OF WILMINGTON, DELAWARE.
CUFF OR COLLAR FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part ofy Letters Patent No. 250,268, dated November 29, 1881.
Application filed May 25, 1881. (Model.)
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that l, MAHLON LooMIs, of Lynchburg, in the county of Campbell and State of Virginia, have inventetha new and 5 useful Improvement in devices for Fastening and Adjusting Cuiis and Collars to Shirts, ot' which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference bang had to the annexed drawings, forming part of this specification.
ro My invention consists in a strip of metal bent at each end in opposite directions to form spring-hooks, having the inner surfaces roughened or serrated and the curved portions corrugated, as hereinafter described.
15 In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1i an edge or .side view of the cuftholder, and Fig. 2 a View showing the application of the holder to a cuft' and Wristband of a shirt.
To make the adjustable cutfholder I use a 2o thin strip of sheetlbrass about six inches in length and one-fourth of aninchin width. This I bend twice upon itself in opposite directions at one-`third of its lengthfrom each end, thus forming a double spring-clasp about two inches 2 5 in length. The outer sides of the curved portions are slightly corrugated, so as to hold the reversed ends in close contact with the bodyot the clasp, and the inner or contact surfaces of the ends and body are roughened or ser- A 3o rated, in order that the cuff and Wristband,
when inserted between said parts, may be securely held in position. The clasp C being thus constructed, the Wristband B is inserted into one of the open ends thereof, the jaw of 3 5 the clasp being slightly depressed to facilitate the entrance of the said band, and the cuff A is then put upon the wrist and a portion of it placed in engagement with the opposite end 0f the clasp in the same manner.
With this device the cuff may be worn with- 4o out being buttoned to the shirt; but a still greater advantage is that it allowsct' easy and instantaneous adjustment of the cuff to any position required, for giving more or less inargin below the coat-sleeve. If a shirt-sleeve happen to be a little too long or too short, by the use ot' this adjustable fastener the cuff may at once be adjusted to its proper dress position. In stating, as I have done, that I malte this holder of brass and of' certain dimensions I do not wish to beunderstood as restricting myseltl as to material or size in its construction, for it may be made of wood, cclluloid, ivory, or other substances. It may also be made larger or smaller and ot' one or more pieces, plain, cor- 55 rugated, or ornamented with various jewels or devices; and whereas I plate the article with nickel it may be plated with any other desirable coating. lt may also be made of wire instead of strip metal. The same device made in the same manner, only about one inch in length, may bc used to hold the shirt-collar to its proper position at the back of the neck.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 65 A device for attaching cuffs and collars to shirts, consisting of asuitable strip of metal bent at each end in opposite'directions to form spring-hooks having their inner surfaces roughened or serrated, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
MAHLON LOOMIS.
