UNITED STATES PA TENT OFFICE.
MARCUS T. GOLDSMITH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CLASP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 635,768, dated October 31, 1899.
Application filed May 20,1898. Serial No. 681,191. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARCUS T. GOLDSMITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clasps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to clasps for use on garters, belts, suspenders, neckties, Ate; and the invention consists in forming the relatively stationary holding portion of the clasp in one piece of metal struck up in box form, whereby the sides of the box form not only the stationary clasping-surface, but constitute also the edges for securing it to a faceplate or shield by soldering or brazing and also constitute the means for securing the clasp to oneend of the garter or belt, thus making the complete clasp in a practical as well as cheap form,
In the accompanying drawings, to which reference is made and which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a garter having my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a back view of the clasp. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the same on the line a" w of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a front view of a belt having my invention applied thereto. Fig. 5 is a back view of the belt-clasp. Fig. 6 is a sectional view on line y y of Fig. 5, and Fig. 7 shows my invention applied to a Suspender.
In the drawings, 2 represents a web which may be used fora garter or suspender or a waist or other belt, and 3 represents the faceplate or shield of the clasp, which is of gold, silver, or other metal in ornamental outline and design. To the back or inner surface of the said face-plate or shield 3 is secured by solder or otherwise a box 4, one side of which is rounded, as shown at 5 5. The said box is made of sheet metal struck upin one piece in a die, and to the sides of said box is hinged a clasp-bar 6, which is adapted to swing over the edge of the box so as to fold the web 2 over or around said clasp-bar and also to bend it outward against the adjacent edge of the box and against the back of face-plate or shield 3. In this manner the clasp-bar, box, and shield hold the web by folding the same upon itself and by compression.
The clasp-bar 6 is hinged at its ends in holes 4;, formed in the side of the box a, at one side of the center of the box, as shown clearly in Figs. 3, 5, and 6, and to the said box is secured one end of the web, either on a bar 7, formed by slotting the box 6, as shown at 8, Figs. 2, 3, and 7, or by ametalloop 9, hinged in holes in the box, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, or any other suitable means.
In operation the free end of the web is passed through the clasp-bar 6, the latter beiugswung back,as shown in dotted lines,Figs. 3 and 6, and the belt and clasp drawn snug to the body, and then by backward pressure on the face-plate or shield the clasp-bar is forced over the edge of the box, thus folding and binding the web, as above described. In releasing the web it is only necessary to grasp the edge 10 of the face-plate or shield and pull outward upon it so as to swing the edge of the box out of the clasp-bar, whereupon the web may be readily removed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As anew and improved article of 1nanufac-' ture, a clasp comprising a face-plate or shield, a metal box soldered or otherwise secured to the back of said face-plate or shield and curved or rounded at its front or clasping side, a clasp-bar hinged at its ends in the side walls of said box and adapted to close over the said front or clasping edge of the box, and a bar at the back of the box, substantially as de scribed.
