PATENT OFFICE.
ALVAH WILTSEY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 742,945, dated November 3, 1 903.
Application filed December 31, 1902. Serial No. 137,319. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.:
Beit known that I, A LvAH WILTsEY, a citizen of the United States, vand a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Shirt- Waist and Skirt Supporter, of which the fol-l lowing is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of my invention is to provide a device especially adapted for holding a shirt-waist in position at the waist-line of the wearer and likewise the waistband to the skirt, preventing the former from riding up and the latter from dropping'down, and to so construct the device that it can be conveniently held in position and manipulated and so that a belt can be connected therewith, which belt when tightened around the person will automatically cause the clamping members of the device to fasten themselves upon and hold the parts introduced without damage to said parts.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the Vseveral parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.
Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the device in position upon the waist of the wearer, illustrating its application, the shirt-waist at the waist-line being broken away and the skirt at the placket-opening open. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device in open position. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the device in locking position and likewise a section through the portion of the shirt-waist and skirt with which the device is in engagement.
The body A of the device is preferably made ot spring metal and is elongated, being of substantially rectangular shape and of greater length than width. A tongue 10 is struck out from the bodyA, the tongue remaining in connection with the lower portion of the body, as is shown in Fig. 2, forming thereby an opening 11 in the body, in which the tongue may enter when the device is at rest or is in operation, and at the upper end of the tongue l0 a serrated or toothed liange 12 is formed, directed horizontally in an outward direction, being consequently at an angle to the body portion of the said tongue, as is also best shown in Fig. 2. This tongue 10 at its upper portion is attached to a curved plate 13, adapted to it to the central back portion of the wearer, and the said plate 13 serves to limit the outward movement of the said tongue 10. This plate 13 is provided with one or more slots 14 at each end, and a band 15 is threaded through the said slots and inthe application of the device is carried around the waist and is tied or otherwise secured at the front of the wearer, the body A of the device being then in a vertical position at the central back portion of the wearer, as is shown in Fig. 1.
An auxiliary clamping-section B is hinged or pivoted to the upper portion of the body A, which upper portion of the body extends above the upper edge of the plate 13, and the said auxiliary clamping-section B in operation is adapted to fold or drop down upon the outer .face of the'body A and is preferably of a width corresponding to the width of said body A. TheV auxiliary clampingsection B at its free end is provided with a toothed or serrated tlange 15a, which entends, preferably, at a right angle from the inner or front face of the said auxiliary clamping-section B, and said flange when the clampingsection is in operating position extends in direction of the front of the wearer of the device. This clamping-section B is also provided with longitudinal slots 16 near its side edges, and through these slots a belt 17 is passed, as is shown in Fig. 1.l
In the operation of the device it is secured at the back of the wearer by means of the aforesaid band 15, occupying the central rear position shown in Fig. l. The body A is then drawn outward from the tongue 10, and the skirt of the shirt-waist is introduced in the space between the body and the tongue, thereby being brought in engagement with the serrated or toothed liange 12 of the tongue. At this time'the auxiliary clamping-section B is in an upper position, so that the waistband of the skirt after it has been properly fastened around the waist of the wearer can be brought to an engagement with the upper outside portion of the body A, at which time the auxiliary clamping-section B is carried IOO downward over the body-section A to an engagement with the waistband ot the skirt, and the belt 17 is then carried around to the front of the wearer and buckled or otherwise secured at its ends. It is evident that as tension is exerted upon the belt 17 the toothed flange 12 will be more and more firmly placed to grip the shirt-waist and hold it in position between the tongue and the body and that the toothed or serrated flange 152M ofthe auxiliary clampingsection B will also more tightly grip the waistband and hold it in engagement with the outer face of the body, and as the two flanges 12 and l5a in the operation of the device extend in opposite directions a firm and steadfast grip is obtained without danger of mutilating the material gripped. It is also evident that when the device is applied nothing remains visible but that portion of the auxiliary section exposed by the passage of the belt 17 through it.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A shirt-waist and skirt supporter, consisting of a body, a tongue adapted .to enter the said body and connected therewith, the said tongue having teeth formed thereon, and an auxiliary clamping member hinged to the body and having teeth at its free end extending in direction of the teeth of the tongue, as described.
2. A shirt-waist and skirt supporter, consisting of a body having an opening therein, a spring-tongue connected with the body and having play in the said opening, which tongue is provided at its upper end with an outwardly-extending toothed flange, and an auxiliary clampingsection hinged to the upper portion of the body, provided with a toothed flange at its free end, extending in a forward direction or in direction of the said tongue, as and for the purpose specified.
3. ,A shirt-waist and skirt supporter consisting of a slotted body, a spring-tongue connected with the body and adapted to enter the slot therein from the front, the said tongue being provided with a horizontally-toothed flange at its upper end, extending rearwardly, and a slotted auxiliary clamping member provided with a toothed flange atv its front end, vextending in a reverse direction to the toothed vflange of the said tongue, as described.
4. Ashirt-waist and skirt supporter, consisting of a slotted body, a spring-tongue connected with the body and adapted to enter the slot therein from the front, the said tongue being provided 'with a horizontal toothed flange at its upper end, extending rearwardly, and a slotted auxiliary clamping member provided with a toothed flange at its front end extending i'n a reverse direction to the toothed flange of the said tongue, a plate adapted to the waist of the wearer, secured to the forward face of the said tongue and extending beyond its'side edges, and a band connected with the said plate, whereby to secure the de- Vice upon the person of the wearer, as specied.
5. A shirt-waist and skirt supporter, cousisting of a body, a tongue adapted to enter the said body, the tongue having a roughened surface formed thereon, a support for the tongue, an auxiliary clamping member, and a support to which the auxiliary clamping member is hinged, the said member being provided with a roughened surface at its free end, extending in direction of the roughened surface of the tongue, as described.
In testimony whereof I have Signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALVAH WILTSEY.
