iTED STATES PATENT OEEcE.
BOOT O R SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part ofl Letters Patent No. 249,738, dated November 22, 1881.
Application filed April 1, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB E. BLOOM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Boots, Shoes, Src.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or gures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specicationy My invention relates to improvements in boots, shoes, 85e.; and it consists in a hoot or shoe provided with a lining and middle sole ot a non-conductor of heat; and to effect this I make said lining and middle sole of asbestus cloth or felting, or of suitably-prepared glasscloth.
Itis well known that asbestus is a good noncenductor of heat, and that glass-cloth has a very low conducting power. I may also use for the purposes described a composition of asbestus spread upon oiled skin or other waterproof substance.
In the drawings, Figures l and 2 are elevations, partlyin section, of a shoe provided with a middle sole and lining of the non-conducting material described. Fig. 3 is an enlarged section ofthe sole ofthe shoe; and Fig. 4, a section ot' the shoe, showing the middle sole and lining with the asbestos felting. Fig. 5 is a middle sole provided with the asbestus felting, ready to be put into the shoe.
In the several figures, A represents the asbestus feltin g ot' the middle sole of the boot or shoe; B, the bottom sole; C, the middle Soler;
The felting and glass-cloth arei'nadewaterproof ina manner thatwillv f'ornnthe subject ot' a separate application.
In summer the soles of boots andshoes become heated by contact with the earth or pavements, and as leather is a good conductor ot' heat the heat is conveyed to the feet and bccomes a source of annoyance, often causing the feet to swell and blister. Now, by placing the non-conductin g material between the foot and the sole ot' the shoe, the heat is conned to the outer sole, and only the normal heat of the foot is retained. Again, in winter the leather becomes cold and the feet chilled and often frosted or frozen, with all the evils consequent thereto; but this is also prevented in the same way by my invention, for the normal heat of the foot is not conducted ott' by the leather, but is retained within the shoe or boot. Now, by using the water-proofed asbestos, or the oiled skin prepared with the asbestns composition,I make boots orshoes water-prooi', and
at the same time conserve the other functions v relating to heat and cold, as just described. Boots and shoes made in this manner are especially valuable in the army and navy, where the men are subject to great exposure of heat and cold and dampness. It is also of great value to hunters and miners.
It is not necessary that a boot or shoe be made heavy in order to avoid heat, cold, and dampness. On the contrary, a light boot or shoe provided with the asbestus lining and middle sole can be worn as well in winter as in summer and the feet be protected. y
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A boot or shoe having a lining and middle sole ot' asbestns, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. A shoe provided with the middle sole, A, and lining A', of asbestus or composition of asbestus, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
J. ELooM.
