BOOT OR SHOE.
SvPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 329,049, dated October 2'7, 1885.
Application filed February 9, 1885. Serial No. 155,322. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
' Be it known that I, HENRY V. J OSLIN, of Titusville, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Leather Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation ofa shoe to which my improvement has been applied. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same, taken through the line 00 m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a shoe to which my improvement has been applied, and showing the improvement extended around the heel.
The object of this invention is to provide leather boots and shoes made in such a manner as to prevent moisture from penetrating the uppers around the edge of the soles and thus dampening the feet.
The invention relates to a leather boot or shoe constructed with a strip of waterproof material secured to the upper along the edge of the sole at the forward part of the boot or shoe, as will be hereinafter fully described, and then claimed.
A represents the upper, and B the sole, of a leather shoe. To the upper A, along the edge of the sole B, is cemented or otherwise secured a strip, 0, of rubber or other suitable water-proof material. The edge of the strip 0 is turned in between the upper A and the sole B, and is secured to the sole at the same time with the upper, so as to form a secure upon wet sidewalks and damp ground without getting their feet damp, and thus without danger of taking cold.
Another advantage of my construction is that the rubber being on the outside of the upper the leather cannot get damp and is greatly protected otherwise. I am aware that rubber has been placed on the inside of the upper, and I claim no such construction. When the rubber is on the inside of the upper, the leather is not prevented from getting wet and becoming cracked and injured.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A leather boot or shoe, made substantially as herein shown and described, with a strip of water-proof material secured to the outer side of the upper along the edge of the sole at the forward part of the boot or shoe, as set forth.
