BOOT 0R SHOE. I
Patented June 27 1882..

UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HELEN MARIE MACDONALD, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
BooT 0R SHOE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 260,304, dated June 27, 1882.
4 Application filed April 5,1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HELEN MARIE MAG- DONALD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Protectors for Boots or Shoes, not hitherto used or known, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, which will enable others skilled in the art to which they appertain to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Up to the present time great need'has been felt for a device or means to be attached to boots and shoes which would prevent the clothing of the wearer from coming in contact with the surface of the boot or shoe at the points shown in the drawings, and in this invention I have aimed to accomplish that object.
The protectors may be made of any wellknown inflexible material, and of difierent designs, so as to presentan ornamental appearance upon the boot or shoe, and they may be fastened by sewing or by any other well-known means of attachment.
I have shown a protectorin the form of a series of buttons fastened to the boot or shoe; but I do not confine myself to that form, as other forms of protectors of metal, composition, or other similar inflexible material, placed at the two points shown in the drawings, may be used without departing from the spirit of my invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view of the shoe, showing the protector attached at two points. Fig. 2 is a front view of the shoe provided with the series of protectors.
A represents a shoe. B B are protectors,
made of composition, metal, or other suitable inflexible material.
In carrying out my invention I attach protectors B B at two points of the boot or shoe, substantially as shown-viz., a-series of protectors are attached on the front of a boot or shoe over the instep portion and at the rear of the boot or shoe near the lower part of the ankle, as shown. The place to be covered by such protectors should include that portion of the shoe in front and at the rear liable to receive the rubbing contact from the lower portion of the skirts, which is unavoidable in walking, and which, without some protection, soon destroys the appearance and finally the value of the boot or shoe.
It is obvious that this improvement may be advantageously applied to all classes of boots and shoes.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-- 1. A boot or shoe furnished with a series of protectors, located at the points substantially as shown and described, for the purpose stated.
2. A boot or shoe with the protectors B arranged on the back of the same,.substantially at the points shown and described, for the purpose stated.
3. A boot or shoe furnished with a series of protectors, of practically hard or inflexible material, located at the point or {points substantially as shown, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HELEN MARIE MACDONALD.
