ALEXANDER HEILBRONER, OF NEiV YORK, N. Y.
AUTOMOBILE LEGGING AND BOOT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 769,606, dated September 6, 1904.
Application filed November 28,1903. Serial No. 183,061. (No modelfi T0 n/ZZ whom, it ntag concern.-
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER HEILBRO- NEE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Automobile Leggings and Boots, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the present invention is to provide a garment especially adapted to automobile and carriage riders, which combines comfort and elegance and is adapted to be worn either by men or women.
Both the legging and the shoe portion of the garment may be varied in size and made to suit the rider, as the present invention is not limited to this portion of the garment. The top part of the shoe portion is made as a continuation of the fabric composing the upper or legging portion of the garment, the sole of the shoe portion being of leather or other material, so that the entire garment may be put on directly over the regular shoe and trousers of the wearer. The outside fabric of the legging and shoe is composed of fur or cloth or other material, and the entire garment is lined with a woolen fabric for additional warmth. Vfhen in place on the wearer, his entire leg and foot is covered, excepting the heel of his regular shoe, which remains exposed.
Hy invention relates to improvements in a combination boot and legging in which the boot or shoe is a continuation of and forms a part of the same piece with the legging.
The objects of my improvement are, first, to combine in a one-piece garment all the advantages of a boot-covering and a leg-covering; second, to provide a legging which will be adjustable to any size leg and one which will conform to the shape of the leg; third, to increase the degree of warmth by the use of an adjustable overlap; fourth, to reduce to a minimum the time required in putting on and taking off the garment; fifth, by the adjustable feature to avoid the crushing and folding of clothing underneath, so as to draw this portion of the garment as tightly as desired around the leg; sixth, to provide a single-piece boot and legging that may be used interchangeably for either right or left leg and foot.
1 attain these objects by the garment illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view of the article. Fig. 2 is a side view, and Fig. 3 is a rear view.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A is the body of the legging, (of fur, cloth, or leather or other material,) which extends in one continuous piece from dotted line in Fig. 2 around the leg to and including overlapping points a on same figure.
B is a short strap attached to A about half way down the legging, having fastened to its end a hook I).
C is a longer strap, attached to A and having fastened to it at its end a small hook 0. \Vhen the logging is wrapped around the leg, the small hooks 7) and a lit into rings (5, placed in two or more series (three in the present instance) at intervals around the circle of the leg, this interval varying in the different-size garments. This succession of intervals is illustrated by the difference in position between the rings (I at the top, center, and bottom in Fig. l and their position in Fig. 3.
D is a short strap fixed to the body of A and holding the rings ('6.
E is the boot or shoe portion, being a continuation in one piece of A, Figs. 1 and 2.
F is the opening to the shoe to admit entrance of wearers foot.
(1 is sole of shoe, which will vary in length.
H indicates one or more lines of stitching across the instep to hold the shape of the legging at this place.
in place of straps and hooks a string and eyelets or other fastening may be used.
WV hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A legging comprising a leg portion having an overlap extending the entire length of the leg portion, with points formed thereon and a toe portion all made of a single piece of material, a sole on the toe portion, straps having hooks on their ends secured to the points,
a hook secured to the edge of the overlap intermediate the points and eyes secured to the leg portion at different elevations to be engaged by said hooks, substantially as described.
' 2. A legging comprising a leg portion having an overlap extending the entire length of the leg portion, With points a formed thereon and a toe portion all made of asingle piece of material, and having one or more lines of stitching across the instep, a sole on the toe portion, straps having hooks on their ends secured to the points, a short strap between the points and having a hook secured thereto and eyes secured to the leg portion engaged by said hooks, substantially as described.
3. A legging comprising aleg portion having an overlap extending the entire length of the leg portion, with a point a at each end of the overlap and a toe portion, all formed of a single piece of material, and having one or more lines of stitching across the instep to maintain the shape of the legging at that part, a sole on the toe portion, a strap secured to each point a, a short strap secured to the overlap between the points, a hook on the free end of each strap and eyes secured to the leg portion, each of Which is adapted to be engaged by a hook, substantially as described.
