LEGGVING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 608,253, dated August 2, 1898.

Application filed March 5, 1897 Serial No. 626,166. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, GILES H. COOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Des Moines, in the county of Folk and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Legging, of which the following is a specification."

I-Ieretofore elastic gores have been fixed in the lower ends of leggings and straps attached to extend around the bottom of a shoe for retaining the legging connected with the shoe.

My object is to provide leggings that are expansible at their lower end portions and that have finger-holds fixed to the front and rear to facilitate their expansion and application and adjustment to the foot and leg and shoe of the wearer, as required, to be retained in place without any extraneous fastening device, and I accomplish the purpose as hereinafter shown and described.

. In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side View of a legging adapted to be readily put on and retained in place without any extraneous fastening device. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the legging applied as required for practical use. Fig. 3 shows a modified form of the legging in which the lower end is widened and flaring and adapted to overlie the top or ankle portion of a shoe.

The letters A designate an open-ended main part corresponding in shape with a boot-leg. Straps B are fixed to the tops to facilitate pulling the legging over the foot of the wearer.

It is obvious these loops D may vary in numput on and oiflas follows: Before putting on a shoe a legging is pulled over the foot and stocking and up over the ankle by seizing hold of the straps B at their top ends. The shoe is then put on and buttoned, laced, or otherwise fastened over the ankle and-the 4 lower end of the legging expanded and pulled down'over the ankle and the top of the shoe by first taking hold of the loops D on the front and rear and pulling in opposite directions, and thus advantageously stretching the lower end open wider and then pulling it down and relaxing the hold and allowing the elastic gores O to contract and clasp the legging fast in proper position to cover and prote'ct the wearer from wet and cold and the stocking and top of the shoe from being soiled.

It is obvious that the lower ends of pantslegs can readily be inclosed in the leggings whenever desired and that my invention is therefore well adapted to be used advantageously by bicycle-riders and others who want to protect their ankles, shoes, stockings and pants by means of leggings.

It is also obvious that when straps have been applied as heretofore in such a manner that the legging could be thereby pulled up tion of a legging is greatly advantageous in that such annoyance and discomfort are prevented.

' I claim as my invention- An improved legging comprising an openended main part conforming in shape with a boot-leg and. provided-"with elastic gores in the lower, end portions of its parallel sides, straps or finger-holds fixed to the lower end portion and front of the legging and straps or finger-holds fixed to the lower end portion and rear of the logging, for the purposes stated.
