BLACKING-BOX HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,757, dated October 25, 1881.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN T. KEARNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, havein vented new and useful Improvements in Blacking-Box Holders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is designed to provide a convenient and useful holder for a blacking box and brush, which prevents their being separated and mislaid or lost when out of use, and also furnishes a convenient handle for the retention of the boxwhile transferring the blacking to the brush.

To this end my invention consists in a holder of noy el form, extended at one end into a handle conveniently shaped for holding in the hand or hanging on a hook upon a wall, and at the other end provided upon its upper surface with suitable means for securing the box thereto between adjustable lugs or clamps suitably formed to encircle its sides, and on the under surface with means for securing the brush to the holder removably, all as hereinafter more fully described.

In the drawings illustrating my invention and forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention with ablacking brush and box attached, showing the means for securing the box thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, showing one of the lugs for holding the brush; and Fig. 3 is an end view, partly sectional, of the same.

Similar letters of reference in the specification and drawings indicate similar parts.

A in the drawings designates an ordinary blacking or polishing brush attached to my improved holder; B, thcframe or holder fitted to slide upon and be attached to the back of the brush, and designed as a holder for the box 0, containing blacking, which is secured thereto between the lug D and the adjustable clamp 0, operating through a lug, D.

The holder B is preferablycast in one piece of metal, but may be made of any suitable material, the lugs D and D being fixed thereon, and formed to fit the curved sides of the blackingbox O, and prevent its slipping out. As a further means of retaining the box in position the inner surfaces of the lug D anti clamp 0 may be inclined inwardly, thus forming at theirjunction with the box a sharp edge, against which the box is pressed and held securely.

so that when screwed up against the side of the box it will bite the same sufficiently to hold the boxin its place.

As preferably constructed, I cast the frame B with flanges projecting downward from the under side, curved inwardly, and titted to slide within the grooves formed on the sides of the blacking brush, which serve to retain the holder on the back of the brush.

The holder is extended horizontally into and forms the handle H for the manipulation of the blacking-box when thus secured thereto, the brush being removed from its holder and used in the ordinary way, apart from the holder. The handle may be perforated or provided with a hook or other means of hanging it up when out of use.

As a modification in the construction of my invention the bottom piece, B, may be made of wood, and the lugs D and D and flangesF provided with outwardlyprojecting feet, properly perforated for the reception of screws, by which means they are securely fastened to the bottom piece.

The lug D may be formed at its lower end with a screw-thread, which, when inserted into the bottom piece to and against a shoulder provided on the lug, is securely held in its place on the frame.

Having described my invention, [claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A holder fora blacking-box,provided with adjustable means for holding the box on one side and with lugs or equivalent means of removably holding the brush on the other, and with a handle for convenient manipulation in use, or for hanging up when out of use, substantiall y as and for the purpose specified.

2. A holder for retaining a blacking brush and box, embodying the combination of a bot tom piece, B, extended at one end into a handle, H, lugs D D, set-screw s, and lugs F F, as and for the purpose specified.
