sTTEs JAMES KANE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
ARTICLE HOLDER;
Application led December 13, 1923. Serial No. 680,390.
To aZZ who m. t may concern.
Re it known that ,latins KANE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania. have invented new and useful Improvements in Article A Holders, of which the following is a speci- 'fication This invention relates to improvements in holders for broomsy and other handled arti-cles, the holder operating to automatically grip the handle of the broom or other article under the action of its weight as it is inserted and suspended in a substantially vertical position, but which will release the same when uplifted, all of which will be clearly understood from the following in connection with the drawings.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a device of this character of simple construction, which is adjustable to suit handles of varying sizes and which will apply a gripping force to the handle of an article proportionate to its weight.
Another object of the invention is to provide means to aid in gripping the handle and means to release the handle when too tightly gripped.
Other objects will appear as the disclosure progresses. These drawings are intended merely to indicate a possible embodiment of the invention. It is obvious that the actual needs of manufacture may necessitate certain mechanical changes. It is therefore, not intended to limit the invention to the embodiment illustrated, but rather to define suc-h` limits in the appended claims.
In general, the device consistsof a base for attachment to a wall or door, a wall member attached to thehase, a cam plate and roller arranged to roll on an inclined surface of the cam plate, all arranged for gripping a broom handle or the like.
For a more detailed understanding of the invention`r attention is now called to the drawings in which a preferred embodiment is illustrated. In these drawingsv` like parts -are designated by like reference characters in all of the views.
Figure 1 is a front view of the broom handle device showing a handle about to be inserted.
Figure 2 is a front view of the handle device with the handle inserted.
Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure -iL is a section on `ure l.
Figure 5 is a perspective view showin@ the roller and the inclined surface on which it travels.
Figure 6 is front view of a modified form of the invention.
Figure 7 is atop view'thereof.
Figure/8 is a section on line 8-8 of vFigure 7.
Figure 9 is a section on line 9-9 of Figure 8 and Figure 1() is a Side elevation of this ine vention.
Referring now to the drawings, wherein like parts designate corresponding parts throughout the specification, numeral 1 is a base having a wall member 2 attached to one side of the base. Attached to the other side of the base is a cam plate 3 having an inclined surface 4 for a roller 5 to roll on. The upper part of the cam plate is arched as at 6. Attached to the cam plate 3 is a plate 7 for keeping the roller 5 in place. At the upper and lower ends of the base are holes 8 for fastening the device to a wall or door.
In Figure 6, a modified form of the invention is shown, having a rod 9 attached to an axle. 10 on which a pair of rollers 11 and 12 revolve to aid in gripping and releasing the handle inserted. The rod 9 at the end is formed into an eye 13 and the cam plate 3a is slotted as at 14C to allow the rod 9 to move into the said slot.
When a handle having polished surface is inserted and it is found that the wedging force of the rollers is not sufficient to securely support the handle, the rod, by being pushed down, will aid in securing the handle in place. On the other hand, when the handle inserted is wedged in too tightly for easy removal, the rod, by being pushed up, will release the handle.
It is, therefore, thought that the structure and operation of the device has already been suificiently set out to make it unnecessary for any further detailed description of the operation.
It is obvious that mechanical changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention. The scope of the invention will be indicated in the appended claims.
Claims:
1. In a device of the class described in combination, a base having curved upper and lower ends, a wall member attached at right line lr-i of Figangles to said base, a cam plate having an inclined surface attached to said base, rollers adapted to roll on the said inclined surface, the said rollers having a common axle, a rod attached to the axle of the said rollers, and a slot in the said cam plate for the said rod to move in.
2. In a device ot' the class described in combination, a base having curved upper and lower ends, a wall member attached at right angles to said base, the inner side of the wall member being concave, a cam plate havi ing an inclined surface attached to said base,
a series of rollers having their bearing surfaces concave adapted to roll on the said inclined surface of the cam plate, the said rollers having a common axle, a rod attached to the common axle of the said rollers, an eye formed at the end of the said rod, and a slot formed in the said cam plate for the said rod to move in.
3. In a device of the class described in combination, a base having a curved upper and lower end, holes in said ends, a wall member attached at right angles to said base, the inner sides of the said wall member being concave, a cam plate having an inclined surface attached to said base, rollers adapted to ro-ll on said inclined surface the said rollers having a concave surface, a commcn axle for the said rollers, a rod attached to the said common axle between the said rollers, an eye formed at the end of the said rod, and a slot formed in the said cam plate for the said rod to slide in.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature.
JAMES KANE.
