Description

E. F. MACKEEVER, SUSPENDING ATTACHMENT FOR BRUSH HANDLES.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 16. I916.-
Patented Nov. 28, 1916.

EDWIN F. MACKEEVER, 0F EDDINGTON, MAINE.
SUSPENDING ATTACHMENT FOR BRUSF-HANDLES.
Application filed June 16, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN F. MAGKEEVER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Eddington, in the county of Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspending Attachments for Brush-Handles, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in paint brushes and has particular reference to an attachment for association with a paint brush handle or the like whereby the brush may be suspended at a predetermined depth in a receptacle containing paint or the like.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a suspending attachment for paint brushes which is simple in construction, strong and durable, cheap to manufacture and effective in operation, the device being capable of application to the various types of paint brush handles now in use and being adapted to engage the upper marginal edge of a paint can or the like for suspend ing the brush submerged.
Another object of my invention is to provide an attachment for paint brushes and the like which is adjustable on the paint brush handles whereby to suspend the brush at any desired depth in the paint can.
A further object of my invention is to provide an attachment of the class described which may be folded within the handle of a brush when not in use.
A still further object of my invention is to provide, in a modified form, a device of the class described which may be demountably associated with any type of brush handle without modifying the handle structure.
Other objects and advantages to be derived from the use of my improved paint brush attachment will appear from the following detail description and the claims, taken with an inspection of the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical fragmental sectional view through a paint receptacle and a brush and handle, my invention being shown in use applied to the handle; Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same; Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of the suspending member detached; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the modified form of my invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein similar characters of reference Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 28, 1916.
Serial No. 104,025.
designate like and corresponding parts throughout the various views, 1 designates a paint or similar receptacle which is assumed to be partly filled with paint or other liquid.
The preferred form of my invention is shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 and embodies a paint brush handle 2 provided with an enlarged end 3 receiving a ferrule 4. The bristles of the brush 5 are receivable within and permanently carried by the ferrule 4. The ferrule is attached to the handle 2 by means of small tacks or the like 6. In the preferred form of my invention the device is to be permanently attached to a paint brush handle when the handle and brush are manufactured. In view of this a longitudinal groove 7 is provided in the handle 2 said groove being provided at its base with a longitudinally extending enlargement 8. The suspending device includes a body 9 formed of sheet metal bent upon itself to form parallel portions 10 enlarged on the inner ends and provided with oppositely outwardly extending semispherical enlargements 11 for engagement in the enlarged portion 8 of the slot 7. The outer free end of the member 9 is formed with a downturned hook portion 12 for engagement over the upper marginal edge of the container 1. A pair of finger engaging lugs 18 extend laterally in opposite directions from the free end of the member 9 to permit withdrawal of the member for use. I
In use it will be seen that the inner end of the member 9 engages the bottom of the enlarged portion 8 of the groove 7 serving to frictionally prevent vertical movement of the suspending member when in the position shown in Fig.1. The free end of the portions 10 of the member 9 are slightly inherently resilient so that the same will snugly engage the slot 7 and serve to frictionally prevent accidental movement of the suspending member.
Referring to the modified form of my invention shown in Fig. 4 I provide a guide member 14: formed of sheet metal rolled into a shape substantially similar to the shape of the slot? and its enlargement 8, said sheet of metal having a tubular portion 15 and longitudinally extending parallel spaced flanges 16 forming the slot. Apertured tongues 17 extend from the free'ends of the tubular portion 15 for securing the same to a brush handle. The suspending member in this instance is designated 18, the shape of the same being slightly different'from that shown in Fig. 1, merely to indicate that I do not limit myself to the curve shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The free ends of the flanges 16 may be joined if desired to prevent entirely removing the hook member 18.
In the form of my invention illustrated in Fig. 1 the suspending member is placed in the handle before the bristles are applied thereto, that is, during manufacture of the brush. However, in the form of my invention illustrated in Fig. at the same is adapted for application to any of the existing types of brush handles. The dotted line positions designated 19 and 20 in Fig. 1 serve to indicate the folded position of the suspending member 9 and one position of the device adjusted, respectively. Thus it will be seen that by moving the suspending member longitudinally on the handle the depth to which the brush is submerged may be readily regulated. The same may be said about the form of my invention shown in Fig. i.
From the above description taken in con nection with the accompanying drawing, it is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of my invention may be had, and while I have shown and described the device as embodying a specific structure, I desire that it be understood that such changes may be made in said structure as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed. 7
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim'as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a paint brush handle, the combination of a body having a slot therein, an. arm pivot-ally arranged for slidable movement in said slot, and means for retaining the arm in said slot.
Copies of this patent 2. In an attachment for paint brushes, the combination with a brush handle, said handle having a slot arranged longitudinally thereof, an arm pivotally and slidably arranged in said slot, the free end of said arm being formed with a hook, the inner end of said arm having a shoulder for engagement with the base of the slot whereby to prevent movement of the arm when in the outermost position.
3. In an attachment for paint brushes, the combination with a paint brush handle having a slot extending longitudinally thereof, said slot being provided with a longitudinal enlargement throughout its length at its base, a supporting arm formed of sheet metal and provided with oppositely extending semi-spherical projections for engagement in the en largement of said slot, said arm projecting through said slot, finger engagin portions carried by the arm, and a shoulder carried by the inner end of the air 1 for engagement with the base of said slot to limit the movement of the arm when in extended position.
4. In an attachment for paint brush handles, the combination with a handle having a longitudinal groove therein and said groove being provided with an enlargement extending throughout its length at thebase thereof, of supporting arms for said handle including a body formed of a sheet of metal bent upon itself to form parallel portions for engagement through said slot, the outer end of said arm having a hook portion and the inner end of said arm having projections extending laterally therefrom for engagement with the enlargements of said slot.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature hereto.
