J. M. GOOKINGHAM,
NEEDLE CASE.
No. 247,988. Patented 001;. 4;.18a1.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN GOOKINGHAM, OF HUDSON, NEW YORK.
NEEDLE-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,988, dated October 4, 1881. Application filed June 30, 1881. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. COOKINGHAM, of Hudson, in the State of New York, have invented certain ncw and useful Improvements in Needle-Gases; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip tion thereof, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form partof this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a cheap, light, and durable needle-case having a series of receptacles for holding needles of various sizes, and a cover adapted to be held and also adapted to be connected therewith in and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing is represented a perspective view of both the case and lid, the latter with its spring-staples.
A indicates the body of the needle-case, which is preferably composed of some light ornamental wood. Itis provided with a series of vertical recesses, a a, which constitute receptacles for needles of various szes, these recesses being made of such depth that the heads of the needles will project above the upperends of the same, in order that the needles can be readily taken out when desired.
B represents the cover, which is composed of a narrow rectangular wooden strip or bar having a longitudinal channel, 1), formed in its under edge, so that when it is applied to the body of the case the heads of the needles will be received in its said channel. In order to hold this cover upon the body of the needlecase, I provide it with the spring-staples O at points upon its under side near the ends, and I form the body of the case with recesses D for receiving the spring-staples. These staples are secured by one end or leg only in the cover,
the remaining ends being shorter, so as not to staples with the short ends at opposite sides, so
as to balance the cover and hold it niore securely in place. Thecover, when thus made, can have different labels applied to its sides, and can be fitted to the body of the case with either side in front, as desired. The case can also have any desired label or printed directions applied to it.
The cover and body of the case constitute, when fitted together, a flat rectangular block, which will be light and durable, and which will occupy but little space.
Itis evidentthat, it'desired, the spring staples can be secured to the body and the recesses made in the cover of the case.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The needle-case composed of a flat body provided with a series of recesses, constituting compartments for holding needles of various JOHN M. COOKINGHAM.
