To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD ERIoKsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Beverly, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Fastening Devices, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a" specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.

This invention relates to a fastening device, in which a pointed member is pivotally connected with a head member so as to be capable of being turned into a position substantially parallel with the head member when not in use, and to be turned into a position substantially at right angles to said head member, when it is desired to use the fastening device. The head member may and preferably will be provided with means for securing said member to a card, tag or like device, whereby said tag or like device may be provided with a pointed member or members, which is attached thereto and is capable of being shipped in a flat condition, that is, with the pointed member in a position substantially parallel with the tag or other device.

The fastening device is especially adapted for use with shipping tags and the like.

These and other features of this invention will be pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.

Figure 1 is a View of a tag or card provided wth a fastening device embodying this invention. Fig. 2, shows the two members of the fastener separated, and Fig. 3, a sectional view, showing the pointed member in its turned-down or inoperative position.

Referring to the drawing and especially to Fig. 2, a represents one form of pointed member,and b one form of head member embodying this invention. The pointed member a is shown as a tack 10 provided with a cross bar or head 12, and the head member is shown as a piece of sheet metal, which is composed of two members 13, 14, connected by a neck portion 15. The member 13 is shown as a circular disk and the member 14 as a substantially rectangular plate, which is provided with a concavity 16 extended transversely of the plate and adapted to receive the crossbar or head 12 of the tack 10. The member 14 is also provided with a slot 17, extended from the concavity 16 to one edge thereof substantially at right, angles to the said concavity, said slot being designed to receive the tack 10, when the latter is turned into its fiat position shown in Fig. 3. The plate member 14 is designed to be folded over upon the disk member 13, which is permitted by the neck portion 15, and said plate member may and preferably will be provided with prongs 18, which are designed to penetrate the card, tag or other device 20 to secure the fastening device thereto.

The pointed member or tack 10 is capable of being turned on the cross bar or head 12 as a pivot, from its operative position shown in Fig. 1, into its inoperative position shown in Fig. 3, and vice versa. When the tack is in its inoperative position, it is substantially parallel wth the shipping tag or other device 20, and the said tags are capable of being assembled after the manner of ordinary tags, and when it is desired to use them, the tacks are turned into their operative position shown in Fig. 1, and can be driven into the object to which the tag is to be attached. Such a. shipping tag is useful for marking boxes or cases in which machinery is shipped, trunks, freight cars and other articles or devlces.

It will be observed, that when the head member is detached from the tag 20, the pointed member is secured to the head member and can be used after the manner of an ordinary tack.

I have herein shown one construction of folding fastener embodying the invention, but it is not desired to limit the invention to the particular construction shown.

Claims:

1. A fastening device of the character described, comprising a substantially straight pointed member having a cross bar at one end, and a sheet metal head comprising superimposed members between which the cross bar on the pointed member is located and a neck portion connecting said members, the upper of said members having a concavity in which the said cross bar is located and provided with a slot extended from said concavity to the outer edge of said upper member which is opposite to said neck portion to permit the pointed member to be turned into a position substantially parallel with said head member.

2. A fastening device of the character described, comprising a substantially straight scribed, comprising a rigid, substantially straight, pointedmember, and a head comprising an upper and a lower member between which the rigid, pointed member is pivotally secured to enable said rigid, pointed member to be turned into a position substantially parallel with said head member, and means on the upper of said members which projects beyond the lower of said members to engage a tag or like device.
