ALBERT E. THURBER, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO CYRUS F. ANDREWS, OF SAME PLACE.
I IMPROVEMENT IN DIRECTION-CARDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,204, dated August 31, 1875 application filed March 24, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT E. THURBER, of the city and county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have made a new and useful invention having reference to Direction-Cards; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l is a perspective view of a directioncard of my new kind or man ufacture. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of its fasteners, such being also shown in top view in Fig. 3, in side view in Fig. 4, and in front elevation in Fig. 5. Fig. 6 is an edge elevation of a card with its fasteners ready for use.
The object of my invention is to produce a direction-card provided with or having connected with it means of readily nailing it to a box or other article.
In the drawings, A denotes a rectangular card of pasteboard, having applied to it one or a series of fasteners, B B B B, each of which, as represented, is composed not only of a metallic disk, at, but of two or any other suitable number of pointed shanks, b b, and a clasping-tongue, 0, extended from the said disk in manner as represented.
The clasping-tongue is to hook upon the card at one edge. The shanks project through the card, and serve, with the hooked tongue,
to hold the fastener and the card in connection.
By laying the card on a box and striking with a hammer on each fastener, its shank or shanks may be driven into the box, so as to secure the card thereto. Thus, if the cards be printed or written upon with directions for the destination of the box, they may be easily affixed to it without the necessity of using nails, each card carrying its own fixture or I do not claim a fastener composed of a strip of metal with teeth at its opposite edges, all as shown in the United States Patent No. 43,435, such being used simply for securing sheets of paper together, and in a very different manner to which the hereinbefore described fastener is employed. N or do I claim sheets of paper fastened together by such.
My fastener has a disk and a small hooked tongue projecting from it, simply to hook on the edge of a card, while the teeth are partly in the card, preparatory to be driven into an article to which the card is to be secured. Therefore, I do not claim, separately, any particular form of paper-fastener, or any form or description of card; but
What I do claim is As a new article of manufacture, a directioncard having attached to it any convenient number of fastenings, each consisting of a disk with a tongue to grasp the edge of the card, and a number of pointed shanks to be driven into the box or package to be addressed, the whole constructed in the manner and for the purpose specified.
ALBERT E. THURBER.
