UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE.
LEWIS H. SONDHEIM, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SLIDE FOR GUARD-CHAINS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,389, dated May 31, 1881.
Application filed April 1, 1881. No model.)
To all whom it m ag concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS H. SONDHEIM, 0f the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Slide for Guard- Ghains, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a newandimproved slideforguard-ohains which can be adjusted very readily and can be used with chains of any desired thickness.
The invention consists in a casingprovided with a hinged or removable side and with a longitudinal partition dividing the casinginto two compartments, provided with springs for pressing the chain passing through the compartments against the opposite. side of the easing, whereby this casing is held on the chain in the desired position.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of myimproved slide for guardchains, showing it closed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, showing itopened. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional elevation of the same on the line 00 a, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a horizontal crosssectional view of the same on the line 3 y, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a horizontal cross-sectional view of a modification of the same.
The casing A is provided with ahinged side, B, having a spring-latch, G, on the edge opposite the hinged edge. The casing is further provided with a longitudinal partition, D, which divides it into two longitudinal oompartments, E E, in which bow-springs F F are fastened at one end to the rigid side Gr of the casing.
The springs may be fastened to the partition D, to the hinged side B, or to the longitudinal end pieces of the casing, if desired.
In place of hinging the sideB to the casing it may be provided with a flange, H, along one of the longitudinal edges, the opposite edge being provided with the spring-latch O. The flange H is passed under the edge of the longitudinal end piece of the casing, as shown in Fig. 5, and is thus held to the same with the assistance of the latch C.
The transverse end pieces, J J, of the casing are provided with an aperture, K, for each compartment E. The guard-chain is placed in the compartments and the hinged side is closed. The springs F will press against the chain and will hold the slide in any desired position on the chain. These springs F are compressed more or less, according to the thickness of the chain.
As the side B of the casing can be opened or removed, the slide can be attached to a guardchain very easily.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Aslide for guard-chains for watches, made substantially as herein shown and described, and consisting of a casing provided with a hinged or removable side, a longitudinal partition, and a sprin gin each compartment formed by the longitudinal partition, all combined as set forth.
2. In a slide for guard-chains, the combination, with the casing A, of the hinged or removable side B, the partition D, the springs F F, and the latch O, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
LEWIS H. SONDHEIM. Witnesses OSCAR F. GUNZ, G. SEDGWIOK.
