VVINFIELD SCOTT MARSHALL, OF OENIRALIA, ILLINOIS.-
CONVERTIBLE SADDLE-BAGS AND HAND=TRUNK.
EPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Application filed January 30, 1886.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WINFIELD Score MAR- SHALL, of Centralia, in the county of Marion and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Saddle -Bags and Hand -Trunks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a device adapted to be used as a hand chest or trunk or as a saddle-bags carrier for horseback travel.
The invention consists in the various features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my invention, the parts being adjusted to form a hand trunk or chest. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the parts arranged to form saddle-bags. Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6 illustrate various parts of the invention in detail.
A and B represent counterpart boxes or cases, adapted to receive inedicinebottles, merchandise, or other portable commodities, and as both cases are of the same construction a description of one'will suffice for both.
0 represents the back of the case.
D D are the sides braced apart by a rod, (1, which is bent at right angles at each end, as shown. The interior of the case is provided with suitable compartments or holders, E, to
F represents the front of the case, which is hinged to the bottom f, and may also be fitted with holders 9, to receive different articles. This front F extends only as high as the rod (Z, and the top G of the case, which is hinged to the upper end of the hack 0, overlaps the front and is to be secured thereto by a button or catch, H. I
I have shown a hinged boX,'I. secured to the top G of the case. Said box fills the space between the rod d and the upper ends 01' the sides of the case.
It will be understood that I do not in any wise limitmyself to the interior arrangement of the cases A and B, as such arrangement will necessarily vary with the different uses of the device; and while I show a very con- Patent No. 340.339, dated April 20. 1886.

venient interior arrangement of holders and compartments for use when the device is to be employed as a medicine or sample case, it will be obvious that where the device is to be used for other purposes different interior arrangements may be resorted to.
To the rear side of theback O of each case I secure a guide-frame'J, (preferably of leather.) consisting of parallel sidesjj, connected at their upper ends by a handle-strip, K, which projects above the back 0, and is suitably slotted to form a handle for the case.
L represents a strap or band, the ends of which are passed through the handle openings kit, one end through each handle. To each end of this strap or band'is secured a metal bar, M, which prevents the accidental disconnection of the strap from the handle. As thus secured, the strap may be readily drawn through both handles until the end bars, M M, come in contact with the under edges of the strips K K, Fig. 2. The bars M M are also adapted to fit under the bottom edgesof the cases A and B, as illustrated in Fig. 1, when the device isused as a hand trunk or chest.
Each side of each case is to be provided with means for securing the cases together when they are in the position shown in Fig. 1. I show in the drawings a hinge device, N, one leaf, n, of which is rigidly secured to the case, while the other leaf, n, overlaps the other case to rest upon a catch-plate, 0, provided with pins 0, which project through slots 1), formed in the hinge-leaf a, after which said pins are turned to throw their lugs 0 out of register with the holes 1) of the hingeleafn.
As thus constructed, my improved device is adapted to be employed either as a hand trunk or chest or carried after the manner of saddle-bags, as follows:
\Vhen it is desired to use the invention as a hand trunk or chest. the two cases A and B are drawn together back to back, as shown in Fig. l, and the cross-bars M M of the strap L are secured under the bottom edges of the cases. The strap L will fit snugly in the spaces between the sidesjj of the guide and handle frame J flush with'said sides, thus permitting the backs of the cases to fit closely together. The catch devices on the sides of the cases are then secured, and the two handles will rest opposite each other to form a convenient single handle for the trunk.
\Vhen it is desired to use the device for horseback travel, the overlapping leaves n n of the hinges are unfastened and turned back upon the fixed leaves a, and secured over catch-lugs q q, as shown. M are released from contact with the bottom edges of the cases and the strap is drawn until said bars rest below the handles, as seen in Fig. 2, thus enabling the strap to be thrown over a horses back to suspend the cases.
It will be apparent that many changes may be made in the details of my device without departing from the spirit of my invention; hence I would have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact form of the several parts here shown, but reserve to myself the right to make all such modifications or alterations as may properly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention. what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. lhe combination, with two independent cases having handles, as described, ot' a strap passed through said handles and having a lon- The cross bars M gitudinal sliding movement, and limited in such movement by cross-bars at its ends, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with two independent cases, of a sliding'strap connect-ion, said strap having cross-bars at its ends to engage the bottom edges of the cases, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with two cases each provided with a combined guide and handle frame, of a movable strap provided with crossbars at its ends and connected to said frames, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, with two independent cases adapted to be secured together back to back, of handles which may be brought together to form asingle handle, a sliding strap, L. and a hinge device and catch-plate to connect the cases. substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
W1 NFIELD SCOTT MARSHALL.
